The New Honda Civic Type-R Will Be A 167mph Mega Hatch
We know from the near-production-ready concept that it’ll look pretty mad, but we’re now starting to get the stats through that confirm the new Civic Type-R will be pretty mad to drive too. Along with these teaser images, Honda has released a few titbits of information about its new hot hatch to whet our appetite. And there’s one detail that’s very successful at achieving just that: it’ll do 167mph…
To put that in context, the car’s chief rivals - the Renault Megane 275 Trophy and Seat Leon Cupra 280 - manage 158mph and 155mph respectively (the latter electronically limited).
The new Type-R is expected to run around 300bhp, but it’s not just power that’ll help it obliterate the competition in terms of top speed. It’s down to the complex aero package which increases downforce and reduces lift.
The Type-R will get a flat underside, which aids airflow to the rear diffuser, sucking the car onto the road. Also at the rear is a ‘bespoke’ wing, which is hopefully as bonkers as the one seen on the concept. A wide front splitter and chunky sideskirts manage airflow and reduce lift, meanwhile, and the front bumper’s specific shape cuts down on turbulence around the front wheels.
In other news, we’re told that the front brakes will comprise of 350mm discs and chunky four-pot callipers.
Want to see the whole shebang in the metal? It’ll make its debut at next month’s Geneva motorshow.
