Particularly to us Europeans who aren’t even sold the damn thing, the entry-level V6 Mustang seems a bit of an oddity. Surely it’s a little superfluous given the existence of the more powerful, only slightly more expensive 2.3-litre Ecoboost model?

It seems Ford has decided it is indeed a little needless in the range, as new information dug up on a dealer ordering system by someone on the Mustang6G forum indicates the V6 won’t live past the car’s incoming facelift.

Both the V6 coupe and V6 convertible are conspicuously absent from the various options available, but in taking away the six-banger, Ford has added some spangly new parts for the 2018 model year.

The Blue Oval’s new 10-speed automatic gearbox will become optional - replacing the old six-speed - and magnetic dampers will be available on both the Ecoboost and GT.

The only reason the v6 mustang should exist is because aussie p platers can’t drive a v8 or a turbo so the v6 is perfect. But we don’t have it in Australia and even if we did p platers can’t afford it as the eco-boost starts at 53k

Ridiculously high amounts of gears is nothing new, the F150 Raptor has a 10 speed, and almost every Hellcat/SRT has 8-speed flappy paddles.

I’d still take the V6 over the four cylinder. Add a turbo the the V6, and it’ll have a lot more power than the I4. Leave it as is, and you’ll have almost as much power, without stressing the engine with forced induction. Plus, flatter power curve.

I would be deeply saddened if the base model V6 Mustang were discontinued. The 2011-2014 V6 Mustang was rated at 305 horsepower, 31 MPG highway, and can do a quarter mile in 14 seconds (some have done less). The 2015 (and newer) V6 Mustangs are rated at 300 horsepower, 28 MPG highway and could do a quarter mile in 14.1 seconds. Honestly, these quarter mile times are practically a tie, but the MPG differences are significant, despite using the same V6 engine. I always thought the reason the V6 got worse fuel economy in 2015 was because of the added weight of the independent rear suspension, new to that year. Although this may be true, I believe there is something that contributes more to this discrepancy…The performance of the 4-Cyl Eco boost Mustang.

2015 Ecoboost 4-cyl Mustang was rated at 310 horsepower, 31 MPG highway, and can do a quarter mile in 14 seconds (sometimes a little less). However, the only way to achieve these performance figures is if you run premium fuel. Although you can run on regular fuel, the performance of the car will drop to well below V6 Mustang performance figures. If you pull out a calculator, you will realize that Ford has the MPG for the Ecoboost on premium being slightly more economical than buying regular for the V6 Mustang. In other words, I think Ford is playing with numbers and that the V6 might actually be more economical than the turbo-four Mustang.

For example, near where I live, fuel prices are $2.04 for regular and $2.44 for premium. If you drive 100 miles in the new V6 Mustang at 28 MPG, you’ve used 3.57 gallons of fuel costing $7.28.
If you drive 100 miles in the Ecoboost at 31 MPG, you’ve used 3.22 gallons of premium costing 7.87. This is only true of current fuel prices at my home and if the cars reach their EPA rated MPGs, but this makes me want a V6 Mustang more than an ecoboost. Numbers aside, the Ecoboost is not as strong of an engine and constantly needs the help of the turbocharger; years from now, the maintenance bill from your ecoboost could conceivably be much higher than the maintenance bill from your V6.

Long story short…FORD, I LOVE YOU GUYS BUT PLEASE DON’T GET RID OF THE V6!!!

I personally want to rent a new V6 Mustang and a new Ecoboost Mustang and see if this actually checks out. Keep in mind, I was using the highway mpg, not the average, I want to see what the real numbers are. I also want to see if using regular impacts the MPG of the ecoboost Mustang significantly enough to justify not using premium. But then, if you’re going to use regular anyways, JUST GET THE V6!

It does not make sense. The best compromise between an expensive and eco unfriendly V8 and a rough sounding / power lacking 4 cylinder is a turbo charged V6. The Ford GT has it …
