Things I hate about Top Gear / Car Throttle.

Car Throttle always reminded me of Top Gear (the good one, with Clarkson, Hammond and May). When it came out that Jeremy Clarkson got sacked by the BBC I saw a comment under a video saying ‘Alex Kersten should host it from now’. I am very happy that Car Throttle is almost as famous as Top Gear, and that it has some similarities. But there was always some thing I hated about Top Gear: The wanted destruction of (classic) cars.

I could continue this list for ever! There was only one reason why they were destroyed: Because they were cheap. No matter if they were classics, no matter if they were in perfect condition. And I just HATE that. The producers of Top Gear were no Car Guys. All they wanted was action, and for that they would do everything. Blow up cars, destroy pianos, wreck caravans etc.
AND NOW THE REAL PROBLEM:
Car Throttle’s YouTube channel is becoming more and more the same!

Again, cheap cars got destroyed for cheap action. And even if they ‘only’ were crappy old beaters - the Proton was extremely rare and could have been saved, the Mitsubishi was technically fine, Mercedes are indestructible (IF YOU DON’T DRIVE THEM WITHOUT OIL), and many parts that 7 series could definitely have been used as well.

My worry is that one day Car Throttle will be the same as Top Gear, destroying several good cars every week.

So, comment your opinion down below: Should Car Throttle destroy cheap cars or should they review expensive ones?

Will this fit on my Honda?

I think you are over valuing these cars just because something is rare doesn’t mean its worth saving. The proton for example appears to be one of the worst cars ever made why would you care if its rare it’s not worth saving because its a bad car. When it comes to old BMW’s Mercs and Alfa’s these cars often become prohibitively expensive to maintain in their old age and aren’t worth saving.

Still, blowing them up is one of the dumbest thing to do with them (imo). You could at least use some parts to save another car.

Well they’re not really classics yet are they? Those cars probably wouldn’t have been restored and would most likely have ended up in the scrap yard anyway. So why not have some fun with them?

Most cars on Top Gear were in good condition tho. Also, the Merc could probably have driven for at least ten more years.

Proton may be rare, but who honestly cares about them? Seriously? The car didn’t look roadworthy whatsoever, so I don’t care.

Rare? In Malaysia, Protons are common as hell…

TG got too far with destroying cars.
CT - not that much.
All the cars are write offs, cheap beaters that have no other use than being “abused”.
So don’t worry too much - cheap beater cars are made to be hooned and used until they reach the scrapyard.

Hi.

I understand that it may upset you to see these cars getting destroyed but I thought I could break it down for you…

  • The 7 Series in Vegas was not in working condition… it was essentially scrap. It had to be trailered to the firing area. It also wasn’t our car, but sure, the original owners could’ve sold it for parts, but they weren’t going to do that.
  • With regards to the £200 Proton, I would be here all night if I were to explain the issues with it, the list is endless.
  • The Mercedes, also £200, had a dodgy idle, a broken speedo and an overheating problem. Both of these cars would have cost a huge amount to repair.
  • The Mitsubishi SpaceStar still lives! In fact, we used it today as a crew car for tracking shots.

Yes, we have broken a couple of cars recently, but in the last few weeks alone we have reviewed the new GT-R Nismo, a 350z, a supercharged S2000, a Fiesta ST200 and many more.

I hope this puts you at ease a bit!

It does. Still, 4 cars in 4 weeks was a bit much…

That sums it up nicely! I also want to add that we don’t destroy cars for the sake of one video. We don’t have the budget for that in the first place. If a car does get destroyed, it’s because it’s essentially scrap and not fit for road use.

Car Throttle cars that they destroy are usually a piece of shiet from scrapyard, but yeah Top Gear takes a little bit too far, they destroy nice, fully functional cars, classic cars, and every sorts of cars. But TG is still awesome !

Saying that most of these cars are past they sell-by date would be a understatement. They are plain write-offs. Restoring Alex’ Proton would be a financial desaster. No matter how rare it is, nobody would pay a decent amount of actual money for it. These are cars that don’t belong anywhere near the civilisation anymore, they are a safety risk for other vehicles on the road. In the end, they’d go to the scrap press either way.
I’m more concerned about oil and fuel leaks of the cars. Spilling old oil and other nasty substances somewhere in the forest is more than questionable. You guys took care of that with the Proton, didn’t you?

To be honest, I’m fine with it. Cars get destroyed everyday, whether it be by accident or on purpose, and that’s just a part of the cycle. While cars that are already classics may get totaled, other vehicles that will become classics someday are being built at the same time.

I remember when they took a jet engine to an old Nissan. It looked to clean and nice, I couldn’t see why anyone would burn it. Maybe it had problems, but I would’ve made it a project.
