Monday Music #37: "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo" by A Tribe Called Quest

For the last few weeks, I have been leaning more towards rock music, but don’t think all hip-hop sucks now (even if things aren’t going so hot). At hip hop’s best it can be both lyrically poetic and well produced musically. Some of the best hip-hop also tells a good story and is not just a bunch of braggadocious nonsense, full of expletives and promotion of violence. Plus this song is both a vacation song and a road trip song, which makes it a good summer petrolhead song. Oh, and it features a classic Dodge Dart in both the video and lyrics. This happens to be my first ATCQ song I have experienced, and it honestly seems like good hip hop music from any perspective, even if you happen to be more into rock or other types of music. Call me an annoying “Born In The Wrong Generationer”, but I have to call out good music when I hear it. I am absolutely satisfied with living in an age where I can access hip-hop and rock classics from my phone. It’s unrealistic to expect rap artists to make music like this today, but I think rappers like Kendrick Lamar manage to do justice to the genre. So that’s it for today folks, good song for summer, good song for car people, good song for rap fans, great storytelling, and absolutely ahead of its time and revolutionary.
