There’s many ways to add a little extra grunt to your car. The most common (and most effective) method is to remap the engine control unit (ECU) - this allows for serious increases in both horsepower and torque, but often costs a few hundred quid and usually voids your car’s warranty. Other common options include adding an induction kit or a new air filter, or simply by using performance fuels, but what about a new sports exhaust system? Not only do you get a beefier and sportier tone, you’ll also see a small increase in power (apparently).

To make a lightweight, fast and agile car that could stand up against the well-established giants. But that was then, what about now? Alpine Retail Group UK invited us to drive the ‘Premiere Edition’ A110 on the roads of West London.

The MINI John Cooper Works (JCW) Hatch is essentially a faster, more hardcore version of the Cooper S which is already pretty fast with its 2.0L Twinpower Turbo engine. The JCW team got their hands on this excellent powertrain. They tweaked and tuned it, added a new exhaust system making the JCW produce 231 hp with 320Nm of torque and a 0-60 dash in only 6.1 seconds for the automatic and 6.3 seconds for the manual.
