I’ve noticed some people (particularly in the Roast My Car section) have been saying all cars with cannon-style rear mufflers have fart cans. I think we need to lay out the rules - the top picture is a $30 muffler probably bought on eBay and screwed onto the factory press bent exhaust, it has no performance benefits, looks cheap and it would sound like something that came out of the rear of something living more than a car - hence the name “fart can”.

With an S14/S15 you normally have to drill a hole for aftermarket intercooler piping in the battery tray area, and because it’s technically an alteration to the chassis of a car fitted with airbags it can mean if it’s noticed in Australia your car can be taken off the road (it’s happened many times, some “not-so-kind” police know what to look for and take the opportunity to get a modified car off the road)

I’ll get right to the point. MCM’s “Mod Max” was not a Silvia, but it was an S15. Mod Max was in fact an Australian-delivered Nissan 200SX GT. I want to make clear from the beginning that this isn’t a criticism, just an observation. I’m going to list a few things that can tell us that Mod Max wasn’t a JDM import Silvia. What is the 200SX GT?

I’m from a railway family and I can tell you that the diesel engine in locomotives doesn’t turn the wheels, it turns a generator to power the electric traction motors to turn the wheels, this is known as diesel-electric. The diesel engine isn’t mechanically connected to the driving wheels at all. I’ve heard of buses using a diesel-electric set-up, but why haven’t we seen cars use this? Electric motors have their advantage in day to day driving.

People have a tendency to classify things, find stereotypes and bunch people into a group. It happens all the time with, race, religion, etc. Everything down to the hobbies people choose. As a group, car enthusiasts of the internet have managed to invent their own stereotypes, and as social creatures, we feel the need to conform to the group’s mentality. But I and I do assume many others are happy just doing their own thing. I appreciate cars, the engineering of some, the looks of some and just the sheer rarity of others.
