One of the few complaints you could legitimately lay at the MX-5 feet (well, wheels) at launch, was it’s slightly dull interior. That the car’s cabin wasn’t really a patch on European rivals shouldn’t really be that surprising, as the MX-5, and the NA in particular, dates from a time when Japanese car manufacturers had yet to really get to grips with plush fixings and well styled interior fixtures.

As we’ve covered many, many times, the Mazda MX-5 is an extraordinarily good car in terms of handling, and it really isn’t much of a stretch to suggest that it has one of the best realised chassis ever sold by a mass market, volume car manufacturer. Of course there’s one downside to the MX-5’s diminutive size and light weight, and that’s a lack of storage space, a problem that’s made all the more acute when you factor in how fun a summer touring car the little roadster actually is.

You could make a strong case for the MX-5 being as close to an automotive ‘blank canvass’ as it’s possible for a modern car to get, and this means that there are literally thousands of tuning parts available for all four models. The majority can be broken down to distinct categories relating to specific areas of the car’s running gear, with prime examples beings suspension, brakes, induction, exhaust, wheels, interior styling, exterior styling, transmission, forced induction and for the really committed, full on engine swaps.

The Mazda MX-5 comes into its own like no other during the (often all too brief) British summer time. Our twisting B-roads are so perfect for the roadster’s supple chassis and thrilling, rear-wheel drive handling it’s almost comical, and when the sun finally decides to make an appearance, well, you’ve got a small slice of driving heaven right there!

It was perhaps somewhat inevitable that the MX-5 would find itself used as the key stone for countless kit cars throughout the world, after all, it’s chassis, engine, drivetrain and sheer abundance make it just too good a candidate to ignore! That the MX-5 should prove so suitable for this kind of conversion isn’t so surprising then, though of course that hasn’t stopped many voicing their distaste at the fact, and it’s also undeniably true that not all MX-5-based kit car projects end up doing Mazda’s iconic sports car justice.

The exceptionally long life of the Mazda MX5 has resulted in a correspondingly impressive list of special editions, limited run packages and concept cars. Some of these amounted to little more than dealer-applied graphics packages, trim upgrades and one-off colours (though often the latter were very special indeed), but occasionally Mazda went all out by adding genuine performance enhancing features, like lightweight alloy wheels, uprated suspension, limited slip differentials, and sometimes even specialist modifications to improve power.
