Let’s talk car magazines. I’m only subscribed to one, the auto motor und sport , which is arguably the best one you can get here in Germany - at least when you’re into modern-day cars. My Dad on the other hand is more into classic cars, though, and so he regularly buys the Auto Bild Klassik . And the Oldtimer Praxis . And the Oldtimer Markt . And the Youngtimer magazine. And occasionally the Auto Zeitung Classic Cars . All of which I read as well.

I’m back at home after my Croatia vacation, so it’s time for another “Unknown Concept Cars” post! And, surprise surprise, it’s once again about a one-off BMW. As mentioned a couple of times already, this is not a BMW-exclusive series, but they just made loads of cool concept cars over the years - plus, this one in particular, I’ve always wanted to write about, and it was even requested in the last post by Adrien Duval.

So, I told you a couple of days ago that I’m not only into cars, but also into busses. I don’t know how much you know about them, but I will try to explain it to you why I made this sketch and render. Let’s start with the basics: Setra, in case you never heard of it, is a German bus manufacturer of the EvoBus group, so in other words it belongs to Mercedes. They are mainly known for their coaches: the so-called “Topclass” lineup, of which the current “500”-generation models are the newest ones.

When looking through my old Car Throttle posts, I stumbled across this one : A short post about an old and forgotten Volkswagen Concept car. And this got me thinking: Maybe I should make posts like that more often? So here it is, the beginning of a new series on Car Throttle: Unknown Concept Cars !

So, on our road trip along the west coast of the US, I got an idea for a new series: #RentalReview! Because in my opinion, even “boring” rental cars can be really interesting, especially if they’re not available in the country you live in! So, to start things off, here’s my review of our rental car: A 2017 Nissan Quest. You can all join in and write an article about your rental car under the hashtag #RentalReview, I’m very excited to see what you’ve been driving around in!

John Godfrey Parry-Thomas woke up from a restless night. His room was pitch-black and cold, and the beach behind the narrow window had disappeared in a moonless night. He dragged the thin blanket all the way up to his chin and tried turning over towards the wall, but his legs and back hurt and he was shivering. The shirt in which he went to bed early was dripping with sweat. His cold had turned into a veritable flu over the last few days, and despite drinking liters of hot tea, he was only starting to get a bit better.

The year 1955. James Dean dies in his “little b*stard”, his Porsche 550 Spider. A dramatic crash at the 24 hours of Le Mans race kills 85 people - the most severe accident ever in motorsport history. Stirling Moss finishes the Mille Miglia in 10:07:48.0 hours, a record that’s still standing 63 years later. Volkswagen celebrates the millionth Beetle (with 20.5 million still to come until the end of production in 2003), and Fiat is hoping for success with their brand-new 600.

Bruce Mohs , an inventor and industrialist from Wisconsin, had many admirers - “Imagine you could meet Thomas Edison”, one of his fans once said about him. Originally, Mohs’ company only produced seaplanes, but in the 60s he dabbled as an universal genius. From reflectors over mini scooters to floating sidecars - Bruce Mohs invented loads of things. And apparently, bike sidecars that could double as boats were exactly what the people wanted at that time.

Audi’s so called “Singleframe” grille is one of the most questionable design features of the last decade. First introduced on the 2004 facelift of the Audi A8, it became a signature feature of every Audi ever since - which caused many discussions. Some people like it, most people say it has become too big, and other people say that it makes all Audis look the same - but still Audi has kept the design for more than 10 years.

I’ve done it. Finally. After months of saving every Euro I could. I’ve bought a new phone. I want to tell you the full story behind it, but it’s a pretty long one. If you don’t want to read all this, just skip to the end, because this is where it gets important.

The first generation of the Mercedes E-Class, codenamed W124 , launched in 1984. Over the years it built up its reputation of being one of the best Mercedes ever built, thanks to it’s sleek design, it’s practicality, it’s diversity and - most importantly - it’s build quality. However, in 1995, there was a new E-Class on the market: The successor to the W124, codenamed W210 - which over the years became known for being one of the worst Mercedes ever built, mainly due to rust and quality issues.

Rims are an important design feature for any modern car, and so the 2017 IAA has brought up some crazy new designs. Here are the best, worst and most hilarious wheels of the Frankfurt Motor Show, and my honest opinions on their designs. First up we’ve got the Mercedes Vision Tokyo. It comes with strange blue glowing rims, which don’t have any visible bolts and which shape is outlined by some triangular chrome shapes.

Police cars - the natural enemies of car guys around the world. You’ve all seen them - but do you know what they look like in other countries? Probably not, but don’t worry, you’re going to find out in a minute. Of course, I didn’t travel to 26 states and then did donuts in the streets so that I could figure out what their police cars looked like. All these images are according to Google, and I always picked the car / livery that seemed to be the most common. Sure, they may look different where you live - so feel free to post a picture in the comments.

Interiors of modern cars are designed with the customers in mind. They have to be stylish, but at the same time they have to be intuitive and easy to operate. Not so with concept cars, which will only be shown on one or two auto shows and then put into a museum. Manufacturers often went wild on their interiors, which often ended up in utter chaos - especially in the 80’s, when computers made their first appearance in cars. So, let’s look back, and count down the 15 weirdest concept car interiors of all time. Enjoy!

We all know the trend of ‘minifying’ cars - basically making cars less comfortable in Photoshop. Now, French artist La tête dans le cul (= “The head in the a…”) has taken it to a whole new level, by cutting out the entire passenger cabin, connecting the front and rear fenders and removing one axle. In total, he has minified 34 cars - which you can now scroll through! But watch out, and brace yourself for the last one…

It didn’t drive. For 31 years. Which is not surprising, considering that it was a Ferrari that wasn’t allowed to exist. With four doors, how outrageous! As if the pope would tango on St. Peter’s square at midnight. Ferrari has kept this ideology until today, for the most parts at least. Shall other manufacturers ruin their reputations by building business sedans, plump SUVs or even tractors. Ferrari doesn’t, at least not yet. Because they are not named Lamborghini, Maserati or Porsche.

Average, big and really big, a 4-seater 2-door and a sports coupé that can transform into a Roadster: A long time ago, Mercedes offered nothing more than these five models. And nowadays? There are A-, B-, C-, E-, G-, M-, S-, V-Classes as well as SL, SLC, SLS and GL, GLA, GLC, GLE, GLS, CLA and CLS; many of them are available as sedans, coupés, T-Models, convertibles, others as Shooting Brakes or roadsters, and on top of that there’s the Citan… Why does Mercedes do that?

Back in 2012, Mercedes launched the Citan: A Renault Kangoo with a slightly nicer interior and a giant Mercedes badge slapped onto the front. Many people claimed that it wasn’t a true Mercedes, causing huge discussions - long story short: of course it wasn’t! Still, successful craftsmen with too much money kept buying it - apparently because they wanted a reliable, German perfection workhorse with a good image. What they didn’t know was that it was just a far more expensive Renault sold under a different name.

Have you ever tried to come up with a name for a car? It may seem easy, but car brands actually spend quite some time looking for exciting, cool and stylish names to match their vehicles. And usually, they double-check if a name might have a different meaning in another language. Here are 18 hilarious examples of when they forgot to do that.
