What car technologies were super exciting when they were revealed, but never really took off?

I remember an age old road test of the GM Hy-Wire on Top Gear. With its “skateboard” chassis, interchangeable bodies (MPV, pickup etc.) and hydrogen fuel cells it certainly captured my imagination.
