10 Great Sounding Convertibles For Spring Time Fun
Warning: The forthcoming videos feature sounds that can have profound and potentially involuntary reactions to those susceptible to aural vehicular pornography. In other words, find the nearest internet-capable device with proper speakers, turn them up and proceed with reckless abandon. Should there be any subsequent involuntary reactions, be proud. It means you’re a right and proper petrolhead.
With the disclaimer out of the way, it’s my great pleasure to inform all the CTzens in the northern hemisphere that warmer weather will soon be upon us. That means convertible season is just about here, and if you love listening to engines, there isn’t a better way to enjoy the sound of power than to do it sans roof. If you’re not fortunate enough to own a convertible, find a friend who does. If you don’t have any friends with convertibles, find new friends. Going topless has a way of making even lame cars at least kind-of cool.
There are plenty of great sounding inline six-cylinder engines in the world, but none of them sound as good to me as the Jag E-Type’s - in this case a 4.2-litre from the Series 2 cars.
The SLS does indeed have a very naughty exhaust note, and going topless just adds to the adult content.
I’m not a big fan of V10 sounds, but the Gallardo pushes just the right buttons. Have a listen and let me know if you agree.
I’m admittedly biased on this, but I also think the smaller 4.6-litre supercharged DOHC engine in the 03-04 Cobras sounded better than the 5.4-litre engine in the later Shelby GT500. And just listen to that supercharger whine.
There’s absolutely, positively no better four-cylinder soundtrack in the world than an S2000 singing soprano. Rev it out, you’ll see what I mean.
I’m not sure there’s such a thing as a bad sounding Ferrari, but the 458’s 4.5-litre V8 is especially epic.
All Boxsters have a satisfying boxer growl, but the 3.8-litre flat-six in this 2016 Boxster is particularly wicked.
There are so many good V12 exhaust notes to choose from - Aston Martin Vantage, Lamborghini Murcielago roadster, and any Ferrari with the Colombo V12. But the old XJS also sounds great, and unlike most of the cars on this list, it’s currently affordable to the masses.
Here’s a car that’s so cheap even our man Alex has one. You may have heard about it, but if not, catch this Project MX-5 mid-build video for some properly good sound clips of an MX-5 in action.
Choosing from 63 years of Corvette awesomeness isn’t easy, but I positively love the LS-powered ‘Vettes of recent years. They sound good stock, but opened up they might as well spew bald eagles and American flags.

I’ll stick with coupes
Best decision you can make
Let’s sum up these cars with 1 sentence.
They’re f*cking convertibles, come on.
Oh and, E46 M3 SMG Convertible, wheres that?
What about vw golf 3 cabriolet vr6 with straight pipes and cai?:)
You forgot the New F-Type. Best sounding convert for the money.
Nope. $17k Porsche 996 cab
Tough to beat a 69 Camaro Z/28 with a 383 stroker…you get the smell of carburated exhaust on top of the noise. Mmmmm.
carbureted exhaust? about that, lol
But why would you stroke the glorious DZ302. Its just a high revving masterpiece of the era.
And the best sounding of all: Maserati Grancabrio

This is why I love CT and thank you I’m sticking with coupes
So yesterday the all new MINI Convertible launched. Imagine following sound and go-kart like handling.
Would be a blast to drive for a reasonable price?

Eagle Speedster should be number 1
And only the MX5 and the Mustang are buyable of them all if you not rich ._.
You can get Boxsters for a price similar to the MX5, at least in the UK. Granted they aren’t the newest models but the still have the boxer engine and still make a great noise.
On a completely unrelated note, I’m gonna see how much a V12 XJS would set me back…
