10 Things Kimi Raikkonen Could Have Done If He Left F1 At The End Of 2015
Rumours have been rife that Kimi Raikkonen was set to ditch F1 at the end of this season after a disappointing start to 2015. Turns out all the excitement surrounding his potential exit was for nothing, as Scuderia Ferrari just announced that Kimi will stay for another year.
“Scuderia Ferrari announces that it has renewed its technical and racing agreement with Kimi Raikkonen,” a statement from the team reads.
“The driver line-up next season will still consist of the Finnish driver and Sebastian Vettel.”
With the Iceman now definitely keeping his seat next year, we started thinking: If Kimi had ditched F1, what could he have done instead?
The Finn previously got a taste of Nascar in 2011, racing at the Charlotte Motor Speedway twice – first in the Camping World Truck series and again later in the year in the Nationwide championship. He enjoyed the experience and has been unusually open about his desire to compete in more races.
2. Run an ice cream truck
Raikkonen’s ice cream obsession was first revealed during the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix, when he tucked into a Magnum during a red flag. So, setting up and running his own ice cream truck would be the perfect venture for the loveable Iceman. Right?
3. Become a motivational speaker
We all know F1’s favourite Finnish racing driver loves to talk, so why not do it as a job? With inspiring quotes like "I was having a ****" and "we’re so ****ing ****, it’s unbelievable," it seems like the natural next step.
When he had a break from F1 between 2009 and 2012, Raikkonen tried his hand at rallying. He made his WRC debut at 2009’s Rally Finland and joined the Citroen Junior Team for 2010, scoring a best finish of fifth, and then raced for his own ICE 1 Racing squad in 2011. He loves the sport and is certainly keen to sample more rally cars in the future.
5. Party hard
From donning a gorilla suit, to falling over while drunk on a boat, Raikkonen loves to party. So, with no F1 getting in the way, he can hit as many bars, clubs and pubs as he wants.
6. Take some time off
Kimi isn’t a young guy anymore, and he has a kid – Robin, born earlier this year. So, he could have just taken a few years off to enjoy fatherhood, spend time with his fiancé Minttu, and make the most of post-F1 life.
It is well documented that Raikkonen is an adrenaline junkie. A lover of snowboarding, snowmobiling and motocross, there are certainly plenty of ways for him to get his speed fix away from the race tracks.
8. Launch his own brand of Vodka
Raikkonen loves a bit of Vodka, so launching his own brand of the drink seems like a brilliant idea. He’d probably want to employ someone a bit better with Photoshop to design the bottle, though…
Because, as you can see, he’s so charismatic and natural behind an autocue.
10. Expand his own racing team ventures
Raikkonen is, obviously, a motorsport nut and has set up his own teams (in WRC and motocross) in the past. So, the idea that he could return to being a team owner – in a wide range of series, from rallying to F1 feeder categories – is a possibility.
