10 Things You Might Have Missed From Last Weekend's Motorsport Action
In another busy and exciting weekend of motorsport - which included the historic 24 Hours of Le Mans, MotoGP and Nascar - here are 10 things you might have missed:
1. 24 hours of non-stop action
The 82nd 24 Hours of Le Mans was a thrilling spectacle, with the number two Audi R18 e-tron quattro of Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer taking the overall victory.
The LMP2 win went to the number 38 Jota Sport car, with the number 51 AF Corse Ferrari and the number 95 Aston Martin Racing car winning in GTE Pro and GTE Am. For a full look at the race and some of its most memorable moments, hit this link.
Why the hurry, Mark Webber? This video shows the popular Aussie’s super-fast reactions after one of his stints in the number 20 Porsche 919 was brought forward by three laps due to a slow puncture for his team-mate Timo Bernhard.
3. Marquez pole run comes to an end
Marc Marquez’s dominant run of consecutive pole positions came to an end at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain on Saturday. The Repsol Honda rider lost control of his bike at turn one towards the end of the second qualifying session, crashing and finishing in third. Dani Pedrosa took pole from Jorge Lorenzo.
4. But his perfect points tally continues
However, Marquez went on to take his seventh victory of the 2014 season on Sunday, but only just. He dropped to fourth behind Valentino Rossi at the start and gradually made his way up to second place. He then battled closely with Rossi before taking the lead with six laps to go.
Pedrosa also found his way through and the three riders battled closely in the final stages, with the two Hondas even making contact at one stage. Marquez just managed to cling on to the lead to win by just half a second from Rossi. Pedrosa fell to third following the battle with his team-mate.
Jimmie Johnson secured his third win of the Nascar Sprint Cup 2014 season on the weekend, after finishing the Quicken Loans 400 race at the Michigan International Speedway in first place. It was his maiden victory at the track, meaning there are now four on the series’ schedule that he has yet to win. Kevin Harvick was second and Brad Keselowski took third at his home circuit.
6. Let me take a selfie
Think you can beat these Le Mans podium selfies? We doubt it.
Latvian driver Reinis Nitiss took the World RX of Norway victory in round three of the 2014 FIA World Rallycross Championship season. Nitiss, at the wheel of his Ford Fiesta Supercar, finished just ahead of Petter Solberg in the final, who had been looking for a home win. World Rallycross debutant Ken Block finished third.
Brian Vickers slid into the wall during the Nascar Sprint Cup race at the Michigan International Speedway on the weekend, before spinning back across the track. Unbelievably, the chasing pack managed to avoid him. Well, all of them except Travis Kvapil, who was the last car in the group.
9. Rogue VW Polo takes on Brands Hatch
A VW Polo took an endurance race at the Brands Hatch circuit by storm on the weekend. The driver put in an incredible performance, but his success was short-lived as he was later arrested and remains in police custody.
The Nascar Camping World Truck Series was also in action. Tempers flared between the team crews of Erik Jones and German Quiroga at Gateway Motorsports Park in Illinois, after Jones was punted into the wall by Quiroga. However, no punches were thrown, unlike these disagreements from the world of motorsport.
