11 Modifications We Want To See Die In 2016

We asked you guys to tell us which modifications you want to see die in 2016. Here are the most popular - and most controversial - answers

“You bought an RX7, the whole point of it is the rotary motor. And now it’s just a Chevy” - SkylineDom

Check out the video above… Matt Farah doesn’t agree with this one!

Is your Honda excessively loud? Do your doors open upwards? Do you own a detachable steering wheel? If you answered yes to all of these questions, you’re probably a ricer. From all of us here at CT, we beg of you, please stop ruining perfectly good cars.

We have to agree with one commenter who summed up the excessive camber craze rather succinctly:

“This crap has to stop” - the Stig’s German cousin

When Engineering Explained explains why a modification is a bad idea, you have to sit up and listen.

Rocket Bunny and Liberty Walk kits were pretty cool when they first arrived on the scene, helping to give some of our favourite supercars some serious aggression. Unfortunately, the tuning scene went a little in mad in 2015, throwing RB and LW kits onto everything. When almost every car at SEMA has riveted fender flares, you know that the trend has jumped the shark.

Chrome wrapping is another modification that has been tragically overdone in 2015. Just don’t tell Ethan…

We love a low riding car, but only when the lowered ride height helps to improve the car’s dynamics. Slamming for the sake of aesthetics needs to be banished to Room 101.

Spoilers serve a useful purpose on a 1000bhp hypercar. They make less sense on a 100bhp front-wheel drive econobox. Unfortunately the trend of throwing huge wings onto underpowered cars has been around for decades, so we don’t see it dying off any time soon.

2015 was the year of the flame spitting Lamborghini Aventador. After seeing a million videos of supercars pointlessly revving in central London, we’d be happy to see this trend die in 2016.

A modification that sounds cool in theory, but looks seriously cheap and tacky in reality.

The fact that this is even a thing still astounds us. Please stop it, America.

Mostly agree. Here’s my opinion.

1: Rotary->LS …Please don’t do it. I’m not a rotary fan in the least, but it’s the most boring thing you can do to a car. Yeah it’ll be fast. But maybe you should have just gotten a car that is meant to have a Chevy v8. Quit ruining future classics.

2: I think most of the “rice culture” sins are covered in the other points. Aesthetics are fine, and you can express yourself however you want. Some people like to fart in public too. I don’t particularly care for that either.

3: Excessive Camber - yes, stupid. If you think it’s “expressing yourself” then be aware that you’re “expressing” that “yourself” doesn’t understand how suspension geometry affects the stability of your ride.

4: Stretched Tires - Agree. See point 3. You’re doing it for pure cosmetics, you cannot claim anything else. Cosmetics are fine, but you’re also damaging the ride characteristics and satability of your ride. You’re “expressing” again that “yourself” is more about show than go.

5: RB/LW Flares: Agree (on the rivet part). Honestly flares are fine — BUT — rivetted flares are stupid on a nice car. Rivets belong on RACE cars. Street cars should have proper bodywork to make the flares flow as if they were meant to be there. Not rivetted.

6: Chrome Wraps: Yeah, it’s just kinda overdone. Everybody knows it’s a wrap. But if you like tacky, I guess it’s just as well as any other color.

7: 100% agree. Slamming a car just because you can fit a shoe over the tire is dumb. I have a 2015 Abarth. Do I want the bottom of it torn up while it’s still new? NO!!! Do I want the bumper crashed into every curb? NO!!! Do I want to live in fear of speed bumps? NO!!! … Yes, I can lower the center of gravity by slamming it (an issue on Abarths)… But I sacrifice usability on the street, and isn’t this about STREET? If your car is a track queen, sure go for the slam. Otherwise? Nooo….

8: Spoilers. Meh. I don’t really have a problem with ones that flow with the bodylines properly.

9: Flame spitting: Give me authentic flames or go home. None of that fake stuff. Everyone knows it’s fake, especially when they’re just coming out lazily like a bic lighter.

10: Color changing headlights: Didn’t even know it was a thing. Probably illegal in the USA (not that it would stop people).

11: Rolling Coal: Sends a signal that says “I don’t believe in global warming or pollution, I hate you, I hope you choke on my soot”… Of course that’s the message these yokels are TRYING to send.

On the subject of respect….No. You don’t HAVE to respect anything. Respect is something earned, it’s something given for a reason, and it’s not forced. If you HAVE to give respect… That’s not actually respect.

In particular, you do not have to respect something stupid. Stance is stupid. It doesn’t deserve my respect. If you respect it, that’s fine. But I can’t respect something so… Stupid. Degrading a cars performance with cartoonish aesthetics of performance cars is absurd. I don’t respect it. I don’t have to respect it. Those people are morons.

Bolt-On Ricer

3, 4 and 7 are gringing me when I hear them scrape, or just knowing they can scrape and risk a tire blow-out because of the stretch.
9 and 5 are actually illegal, at least in Europe they are most places.
