This Is The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro In All Its 455bhp LT1 V8 Glory

There’s been a long build up to this reveal, with umpteen spy shots, teasers and the now-standard leak, but finally the sixth generation Chevrolet Camaro has been officially revealed. It’s a handsome car, taking the familiar Camaro shape and adding some futuristic flourishes.

First, though, let’s talk engines. First up it’s the entry-level 2.0-litre inline-four, which gets a single twin-scroll turbocharger, and makes 275bhp and 295lb ft of torque. Chevy claims it’ll do 0-60mph in “less than six seconds”. Then there’s the 3.6-litre V6, which is an all-new construction and features the highest specific output for a naturally aspirated engine at 335bhp and 284lb ft of torque.

The one we care about, though, is the 6.2-litre LT1 V8 that’s been plonked under the hood of the SS. It makes 455bhp and 455lb ft of torque, though Chevrolet hasn’t revealed its sprint times yet so it’s unclear exactly how well the Camaro puts its power down. It’s not exactly the same engine found in the Stingray, however, with around 20 per cent of components changed, including a new exhaust manifold.

All models are available with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which has a different tune in the SS that’s all about power rather than efficiency. More importantly, you can also spec a six-speed manual.

One of the biggest complaints you guys had after seeing the shape in these teasers was that Chevrolet hadn’t addressed the issue of visibility. The interior looks vastly improved over the fifth generation car, so if we’re finding silver linings, at least the things that are blocking your view look a lot nicer this time around.

Overall the styling looks like a nicely modernised interpretation of the Camaro shape, and that interior looks brilliant. We’re more excited about trying out that stonking V8, though the most important question that needs to be answered soon is whether it stacks up to the brilliant Ford Mustang.
