This Is The 2016 Honda NSX
The 2015 Detroit Motor Show played host to the reveal of the new Honda NSX. This hybrid supercar has been on our radar for a long time, but now we have all the details.
The power unit is a longitudinally-mounted twin-turbo V6, mounted low in the chassis to keep the centre of gravity as close to the floor as possible.
Accompanying this traditional engine are electric motors; the V6 works with a direct-drive electric motor through a nine-speed dual clutch transmission to power the rear wheels. Twin electric motors on the front axle power the front wheels to provide extra kick, with the instant torque providing ‘zero delay acceleration.’ All together, that results in more than 550bhp, tamed by the catchily-titled Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system.
The focus on creating a driver-centric sports car has resulted in the NSX getting the lowest centre-of-gravity in its class. An aluminium space frame and suspension help this. The bodywork is free from active aerodynamics, with air exiting from vents in the hood held tight to the car, before getting sucked into the rear vents to cool the engine.
The interior is designed to ‘improve your driving performance,’ and is dubbed human support cockpit by Honda. Visibility is good thanks to A thin A-pillar. A knob on the dashboard allows the driver to select from four modes; quiet (which enables pure EV mode), sport, sport+ and track.
There will be more than one specification available, with first customer deliveries expected to be made later this year. Prices will start in the mid-$150,000 range.
