2024 BMW X2 Arrives As ‘Coupe’ SUV With 296bhp M Version And iX2 EV
BMW has sought to make the new X2 much more distinct from its X1 sibling, and the result is this new ‘Sport Activity Coupé’ or ‘SAC’. It’s another modern BMW design that’ll prompt plenty of debate online, with a front end dominated by what the company describes as an “almost hexagonal” set of kidney grilles which can illuminated with the ‘BMW Iconic Glow’ system.
Behind those kidneys, you can have, if you like, a 296bhp 2.0-litre inline-four. This powers the X2 M35i, giving it a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds and presumably (the press release doesn’t specify) the usual electronically limited 155mph top speed. As is the case with the X1 M35i, some markets receive a 312bhp version.
Along with the extra power, the M35i gets a new front splitter, a boot spoiler, a unique chassis tune featuring standard-fit adaptive dampers, beefier brakes and 20-inch wheels. 21-inch wheels are optional.
The M(ish) version is almost matched in terms of acceleration by the all-electric version of the X2, the iX2 xDrive 30. It manages the 0-62mph sprint in 5.6 seconds but is electronically limited to 112mph, meaning you won’t accidentally rinse through a chunk of your range by getting carried away on the autobahn.
It’s actually a smidge more powerful than the M35i, producing 309bhp from its dual motor powertrain (plus a beefy 364lb ft of instantly delivered torque), but will be a lot heavier thanks to the 64.8kWh battery pack it has to lug around. This provides a range of up to 279 miles according to the WLTP cycle, and 130kW charging capability means a 10 to 80 per cent top-up should just sneak under 30 minutes depending on conditions.
You can also have the X2 in front-driven sDrive 20i flavour. Packing a 2.0-litre four-pot with 168bhp and 207lb ft of torque, this will take the SUV from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. Some markets (but not the UK) can also have a diesel sDrive 18d.
Inside, there’s BMW’s ‘Curved Display’, housing a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment system, both running on the ninth-generation version of the company’s iDrive operating system. As is now the norm for BMW’s smaller cars, there’s no longer a physical rotary controller, but you do get the new ‘QuickSelect’ system of customisable shortcuts.
2024 BMW X2 and iX2 price
Pricing for the X2 kicks off at £39,465 for an sDrive 20i, rising to £47,395 for an M35i. Stepping up to an iX2 isn't cheap - you’re looking at a starting figure of £56,540 - which works out at around £4,000 more than a comparable iX1. You can order an X2 now, with deliveries starting in March 2024.
