3 People Killed After Man Drives SUV Into Crowds At Austria F1 Event
According to the BBC, three people have died and dozens injured after a man drove a Daewoo Rexton SUV into crowds in central Graz, Austria.
Police said the driver of the car – a 26-year-old Austrian – has been detained after ploughing into the city’s main square, where an F1 event was being held, and a busy shopping street at high speed on Saturday.
Part of the city, which is the second largest in Austria, has been sealed off and emergency services have launched a major operation. The regional governor confirmed three people have died and 34 others have been injured.
The incident took place on Herrengasse - a busy shopping street - and Hauptplatz, Graz’s main square where the BBC reports that crowds had gathered at an event related to this weekend’s F1 race.
The Austrian Grand Prix takes place tomorrow at the Red Bull Ring in nearby Spielberg. AP reports that Graz’s Mayor has cancelled all events in the city after the tragic incident.
There are unconfirmed reports that after crashing, the man left the car and attacked people in the square with a knife. We will keep you updated with all the latest. Our thoughts are with all those affected.
