The 335bhp VW ID7 GTX Costs From £61,980
VW’s commitment to offering a warmed-over GTX version of its entire range of ID electric cars is commendable if slightly confusing – you can even get a quick-ish version of the ID Buzz people carrier. Making a lot more sense is the VW ID7 GTX, the hottest version of the only saloon the company still sells in Europe, and its Tourer estate counterpart.
The pairing was revealed earlier this year, with the Tourer version somewhat unusually debuting almost three months ahead of its saloon counterpart. Now, pricing has been confirmed for both: the saloon starts at £61,980, and the capacious Tourer costs from £62,670.
That buys you a dual-motor, all-wheel drive setup making 335bhp. It’s the same setup you’ll find in the likeable but confusing ID Buzz GTX, as well as the GTX versions of the ID4 and ID5 and even the controversial new Ford Capri.
It’s perhaps most at home in the ID7, though, where it propels the saloon to 62mph in 5.4 seconds and the Tourer in 5.5. They get an 86kWh battery which provides a quoted range of 366 miles in the saloon and 359 in the Tourer, and both can be topped up from 10 to 80 per cent in 26 minutes on a rapid charger.
Other GTX-specific bits include a tweaked front end, 20-inch wheels and the option of Kings Red paint, which VW has chosen as the GTX range’s signature shade. There's also adaptive chassis control fitted as standard. Inside, they get GTX-specific black upholstery with lots of flashes of red.
Both cars compete in relatively niche segments at the moment. The saloon’s biggest competitor is probably the dual-motor, 321bhp Hyundai Ioniq 6, which starts at over £11,000 less. The Tourer, though, does undercut the identically powerful BMW i5 Touring by around £8,000 – and gets a bigger boot. Both body styles are available to order from 1 August.
