5 Reasons Why The GT6 Course Maker Is The Best Racing Game Feature Ever
Back in December 2013 when GT6 was released, a number of features were listed as coming to the game by way of a future update. These features have all arrived in dribs and drabs over the last two years, with one exception - the Course Maker. We need wait no more though, as the final piece of the GT6 jigsaw was added this morning. Here’s why it might just be the best racing game feature ever…
1. You have almost complete control over everything
GT5’s course maker was more like a randomiser based on slider values. It could make some fun tracks, but they were never really your own creation.
The GT6 version gives you just about complete control over individual areas of track, with a 10km maximum length. You can even put trees or kerbs down where you like.
You can’t adjust elevation - that’s locked to the terrain of the theme you use - so perfect replicas of undulating tracks are unlikely. That’s probably in Sony’s best interests from a legal point of view…
2. You can draw anything
Yep, anything. Whatever you can doodle can be turned into a track. It’s just a case of sketching it out on the companion app and importing it into the game. Yes, there’s going to be a very large selection of penis-shaped tracks.
3. You can import tracks from photos
Can’t draw? No problem. Just scan in a photo. Or grab a circuit map of your favourite track from Wikipedia. Make your journey into work a track if you like. This particular feature is only supported on the Eifel Flat theme though, and as the name suggests, it features no elevation changes.
4. The interface is incredibly simple
There’s no fiddling about. Just trace out your track with your finger, fine-tune the bends, drop in some trees, kerbs or trackside furniture and you’re done. You can be as picky as you like though - and we’re looking forward to seeing some of the intricate concoctions that hardcore track designers come up with.
5. You can make and store up to 30 tracks - and share them too
If you’ve got a serious passion for creating tracks, you can import up to 30 to your PS3, so there’s plenty of space for a future Hermann Tilke to fill his boots.
The Community Features added to GT6 a few months back allow for uploading and sharing of user-created tracks. This means that, depending on the size of your club you may have several thousand new tracks to try by the morning - easily the biggest circuit selection of any racing game ever.
There is one major limitation though - you cannot use the track maker in GT6 itself. It’s entirely for use on Android and Apple devices (no Windows!) and locked to tablet-sized screens, so even smartphone owners will be disappointed.
