Being a part of the muscle car community is pretty cool for the most part, but sometimes there are things about it that get under my skin. Here they are…

One: Muscle Car Rice

Before you start a flame war in the comments, hear me out first. The kind of rice I’m talking about is taking a gorgeous interior and exterior of a car and throwing it all out the window in the name of being modern (the Mustang pictured above is a good example of that). Just go look up custom classic car interior, you’ll see what I mean. I’m OK with making people making minor to moderate changes in the interior and exterior, but drastically altering it is a no no in my book. People should retain the stock look of the cars more (but upgrade the shoddy brakes and tires for goodness sake).

Two: Brand Snobbery And JDM Hatred

Not only do muscle car enthusiasts throw crap at Japanese and European cars, they do the same thing with each other. By the amount of roasting fellow muscle car enthusiasts do to each other, I’m surprised they haven’t been served on a plate for Thanksgiving. They also aren’t too kind with enthusiasts outside their circle, creating a hostile atmosphere. In the words of the Beatles, perhaps in this situation “love is all you need.”

Three: Too Many V8’s

That’s right, I said it; sometimes I feel like the muscle car community should diversify a little bit with it’s engines. Believe it or not, you can get used to chrome carbureted V8’s after a while. I really like cars like the Buick GNX and muscle cars with truck turbodiesels are rather admirable. Heck, I’ve heard some old American inline sixes sing like a bird in Argentinian racing leagues, maybe we need more of that. Is it really that bad to be a little different every now and then?

Four: Overvaluing Cars

This problem is somewhat universal in the car community, but it does apply to muscle car culture. I understand that people love cars like the Plymouth Barracuda, Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Chevelle. However, if you were to remove nostalgia from the picture, classic muscle cars objectively aren’t that great. I remember seeing the factory welds on a classic Dodge Challenger once and they weren’t pretty at all. I don’t want to pay 6 figures for a car that has technology that’s older than a floppy disc.

Five: Undertired Or Overpowered Cars

I love burnouts as much as the next guy, but cars that can burn the rear tires with ease can sometimes be a real pain in the rear to keep hooked up when driving. In a Hellcat, you can’t truly floor it 90% of the time on the street without the TCS turning on or the rear tires going up in white smoke; either the Hellcat needs better tires or (heaven forbid) less power. However, if I had to choose in between those two options, I would go with better tires.

Excessive wheelspin can be frustrating when you’re trying to get good and consistent quarter mile times

Yes, burnouts are rad, but what if your creeping your way through slow moving traffic and every time you touch the throttle you smoke your tires because of the compound? Wouldn´t say it´s that fun anymore.

But yes. Let´s keep a set of burnout rear-tires back home in the garage ;D

Bring a Caterham To MARS

Completely disagree on the first point.
I’m not against expressing your opinion, with which I disagree with and it’s ok, but going as far as saying it should be made illegal? Really?

It should be illegal in my humble opinion. Theses cars are around 40 years old, customize them would prevent anyone that has not witnessed this glory era with their own eyes to see and experience it themselves. I mean they are bits from the past, memories belonging to the automotive history and they should be kept stock. What if your son ask why all there is no old car left ? “Everybody just riced them out son, they did not realize it was a mistake”

#1: I’m actually into the modernization of old cars while keeping their original looks and charm.

#2: Yes. So much yes.

#3: Variety is always nice. Diehard muscle car guys sure are picky about what makes a muscle car a muscle car, though, not that there’s a solid, concrete, universal definition for them.

#4: Overvalue is bound to happen with highly sought after, historically significant classics. Not something that can be helped.

#5: Opinions, opinions.

Personally, I think the Corvette isn’t a muscle car, but that’s as far as I go.

The car in the first photo only has a widebody kit due to point 5. They needed more tire because the stock width was too much for 1000hp.

1). I respect your opinion. But, people are allowed to express their feelings. Just like your 1st amendment. I agree that the above Mustang does not look good, but to someone it is a piece of art. Like I am a RICER, which the most hated thing in car culture. But I like it. Just like that, the Mustang featured is someone’s pride and joy.
I respect your opinion.

2). This is true!
From my muscle car guy perspective, I am a hardcore Chevy/Dodge who hates most Fords except Crown Vic, New edge Mustang, GT, Excursion etc.
Heck, I even don’t like the Hellcats because I’m a Challenger R/T fanboy.
Looking at my recent posts, I show clear hatred towards the 350z. I think I turning into a full-blown muscle car guy. shudders This should not happen.

3). You’re right, muscle-car-guy-who-bought-JDM(I’m sorry LOL). There are I4, I6 and V6 that have the potential of a muscle engine. I am actually gonna a write a blog on definition of muscle car.

4). Couldn’t agree more. I love classic muscle cars and I did not know about their quality.

5). I agree. We need better tyres in cars with high power.

This turned out to be a #blogcomment LOL!

BTW, thanks for writing the name of Plymouth Barracuda. I forgot the name.

The first Corvette had the Blue Flame inline 6 matched to a 2 speed auto, the 3 speed manual came later

Ford is hated because back in the 90s, they said apparently said “F*ck all to reliability”, and that made people think “Well, if this Ford broke down, maybe every other will do so as well! Better start making horrible jokes now!!!1”
