I have recently discovered another way American, European and Japanese car makers are similar. There are certain types of cars that are made by many of those manufacturers; here are those types of cars.

One: Hot Hatch
The hot hatch is a wonderful thing. It’s zippy, small, fuel efficient and somewhat practical. All three continents that produce a lot of cars have their own version. Ford has the Focus ST and Fiesta ST, Volkswagen has the Golf GTI, and Honda has the SI and Type R. These cars are also relatively affordable too, some are all wheel drive as well with many having turbochargers for aiding in storming forest back roads.

Two: Muscle Cars
The definition of a muscle car is very varied, but the way I see it, if it’s a two door cars that can lay two black stripes across a city block, it’s a muscle car. They also generally are easy to make very fast and relatively cheap. America and Australia are the most famous muscle car manufacturers, with the Falcon, Charger, Chevelle and such. However, Europe and Japan make muscle cars too in a sense. The Mercedes C63 AMG coupe fits the bill nicely as well as the V8 Jaguar F-Type. Although the Nissan 300ZX 350Z and 370Z isn’t as hairy as a C63 coupe or a Dodge Challenger, by Japanese standards it’s a muscle car because it’s the current Japanese car that comes the closest to being like a Ford Mustang GT. Other Japanese muscle cars include the Nissan Skyline GTS-T and Toyota Supra.

Three: Off Roaders
This class of vehicles include the likes of Land Rovers, G Wagons, Toyota pickups, and so on and so forth. Vehicles like these can have good off road prowess and can tow and haul more stuff than most. European off roaders tend to be more luxurious, while Japanese and American off roaders cater more towards the working man. Solid rear axles, four wheel drive, high ground clearance and big chunky tires are the name of the game here.

Four: Sporty Luxury Cars
At least half of major car manufacturers make luxury cars, and just as many make sporty versions of said luxury cars. Cadillac has the ATS-V and CTS-V, BMW has cars with M sport packages, and Lexus has cars like the RC-F and IS-F. These cars are a good blend of both sportiness, practicality and luxury. New ones don’t come cheap, but you could find a used one for a reasonable price. All wheel or rear wheel drive, wagon coupe or sedan these cars are the under appreciated cars of the car scene.

Five: Supercars
Many people call cars with high end performance and a high price tag supercars. These cars are the fastest and most desirable cars car manufacturers can offer. Examples of supercars include the Ferrari 599 GTO, Lamborghini Aventador, Aston Martin Vantage V12, Corvette ZR1, Lexus LFA, and so on and so forth. Europe dominates the supercar market, but Japan and America make often beat European supercars at their own game.

Although being a more JDM pointed guy, I can see why the Supra could be considered a muscle car. Oh, the more you know!
