The 577bhp Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe Is So Gorgeous, It Needs A NSFW Warning
When the utterly beautiful Mercedes S-Class coupe was unveiled recently, we had no doubts that the eventual AMG version would look even better. Sure enough, the AMG'd-up S-Class coupe is here, and we're dribbling furiously.
Under the bonnet is AMG's burly 5.5-litre, twin-turbo V8. In the S63 AMG coupe, it makes a beefy 577bhp and a tyre-shredding 663lb/ft of torque. Sounds a lot, but it needs it: this car is 5kg short of two tonnes. Power is sent to the wheels via AMG's Speedshift auto gearbox. You can choose between a rear-wheel drive S63, or a four-wheel drive '4Matic' version, which curiously weighs no more than its two-wheel drive brother.
Spec the 4Matic with its extra traction off the line, and this luxobarge will crack 0-62mph in an incredible 3.9 seconds. In the rear-wheel drive version, the same dash will take an impressive 4.3 seconds, while both have the usual 155mph electronic limiter.
The rear-drive coupe gets Merc's unbelievably clever Magic Body Control. As revealed in the unveiling of the standard coupe, you'll also get the Stuttgart firm's equally ingenious new active tilting system, which 'leans into bends much like a motorcyclist, thereby reducing the lateral acceleration acting on the vehicle’s occupants.' Essentially, you can throw this car around a good set of bends with a reduced risk of any passengers hurling all over the opulent leather interior.
There's no word on pricing just yet, but we'd expect the S63 coupe to cost around £100,000. It'll make its public debut at the New York motor show next month, and be launched in the UK late this year.
