6 Creature Comforts My Teenage Self Would Hate Me For Loving
In-built sat nav
I’ll be honest: I’m starting with a double-edged opinion on this one. Honestly, manufacturer satellite navigation systems tend not to give as useful or traffic free routes as the free apps from Google and Waze, but they come with the added bonus of not having to plug a mobile phone to your windscreen.
I’ve just spent my first week with our new Abarth 595 long-term test car, and I’m finding the lack of a sat nav seriously annoying. I just moved house and so used all my phone data for the month trying to organise stuff without WiFi. That means if my girlfriend isn’t with me I’ve had to try navigate using actual signposts like something out of the old days. Sat nav systems that are neatly built into the dashboard are a tidy solution to my atrocious sense of direction.
Bluetooth
I’m a firm believer that anything that makes it easier to distract you behind the wheel should be banned. All these new cars providing connectivity that basically let you use your phone without actually holding your phone aren’t really fixing the problem. That said, any car that doesn’t have excellent Bluetooth connectivity to allow me to play Spotify or whatever podcast I’ve just downloaded through its speakers is unacceptably rubbish. I hate the vast majority of radio stations due to cringeworthy DJs or repetitive playlists, so if I can’t play something through my phone my journey is irreparably ruined.
Electric seat adjustment
Yanking a lever beneath the seat so you can slide back and forth is nice and simple and works well enough, but it’s a little imprecise. Trying to move it a couple of inches takes a deft touch and serious concentration, and if you accidentally slide well out of position you’ll be back and forth for days trying to get it just right again.
I’m not the first CT staffer to sing the praises of electric seats, but I want to sing their praises once more. Electric seat adjustment is awesome, because it’s easy to make small adjustments to get your seat perfectly positioned. And best of all some come with a memory so you can let your partner drive your car without raging that everything’s been moved!
Quick defrost windscreens
There’s nothing less pleasurable than sitting in your icy car, waiting for the engine to warm up enough to clear the windscreen. Or perhaps you’ve been sat in your car for a while and the windows have steamed up, but you don’t want to smear the glass by wiping them clear. Fortunately, windscreens that defrost in seconds are now a thing, and are a massive life saver for impatient people like me.
Boot release buttons
No one likes getting their hands dirty closing the boot, so those nifty little buttons that open and close it for you are heaven sent. Such a simple solution to something most of us could probably actually live with, but let’s be honest, we’ve all cursed having nowhere to wipe our mucky digits after closing a filthy boot.
Auto-dimming rear-view mirror
I’ve never quite got on with the old school way of deflecting the headlights of cars travelling behind you by altering the angle of the mirror. I’ve always felt like it makes it hard to judge distance and distinguish cars from one another, so I’m always delighted to see a car mirror get a green tint as night falls instead. It reduces glare while still allowing you to make out what’s behind you. I can’t go back.
Comments
What a great list! It’s like reading from somebody who’s as far away from cars as possible.
In-built sat nav - cause nothing says “good choice” as a nav that goes out of date in a month, costs a ton to update and is worth about 1 grand extra cash to spec. Sure is great to not need to plug in your Garmin.
Bluetooth - for those who can’t live without fiddling with their phone every 12 seconds.
Electric seat adjustment - because you adjust seats about 28 times every trip to the shop. It’s not like something you do once and then forget about till you lend you car to somebody (which is not something petrolheads do on a regular basis).
Quick defrost windscreens - Your car is cold, you’re going to sit in it and wait till the engine is at running temp and then when it can defrost your windscreen? Ice scraper? Or are you one of those jokers who drive a snowpile with a windshield in winter? You’re going to remove all the snow off your car in winter before driving off anyways, why not ice scrape your windshield while you do do. You’re going to do it with side windows anyway. But no, sit in a cold car wait for it to warm up.
Auto-dimming rear-view mirror - there’s literally a flip switch in older cars for it, how the hell do you not figure out how to work it? What distance are you about to judge if a guy behind you is blinding you through your mirror? Why use mirror in this scenario anyway?
Boot release button - this one is useful.
In-built sat nav is far better than on screen or if you travel to many different places far away that are badly sign posted, as well usually being for a massive area such as the EU, instead of having a garmin and buying a map at £90 for each country.
Bluetooth- allows you to take calls and be far safer instead of one hand of the steering wheel to do so, as well as making commutes better if you listen to music on them.
electric seats- up to personal opinion
quick defrost - helps if you’re in a rush and need to go quickly even if it’s just cold out and you get in and then the window goes misty you will still have to wait a while before you can actually drive, sometimes you can’t always start your car a while before you drive.
Auto-dimming - it would be handy on country roads with lots of bends where you can’t actually take the concentration of the road for fear of an accident.
boot release button - it’s useful for mothers and people carrying something heavy etc so you don’t have to set it down just to pick it back up.
They’re a mix of safety features and ways to make your life easier, no ones forcing you to buy them or use them, but many newer cars and vans come with some of these features as standard
Since when does the Swift has a Quick Defrost Windscreen?
wasn’t an option on mine, neither was in the car itself.. :|
Ive got one. Has heated mirrors though!
Ford used to be the only ones with heated screens, but I guess their patent for it has ran out so everyone is doing them now?
I have never heard of these “Quick Defrost Windshields” probably because the newest vehicle I’ve ever owned has been a 2002. Can anyone shed any light on how these work and how they are different than the traditional way of clearing the windshield?
Think of the heated back window… The wires are much thinner though so it doesn’t obstruct the view :)
The car I had that had it was a 2003 and I know a guy with a 1987 Sierra Cosworth that has it! It’s just tiny invisible filament wire in your front screen that heats up to get ice off it quicker in the morning!
I had a heated front windscreen on a car made in 2000, it’s not that new of a technology at all! It worked great though on that car and melted ice at the touch of a button.
i only need the auto dimm because audis are using high beams directly behind you and bluetooth (but aux would be enough) the rest is just too heavy for my racecar
If your 4g internet is over why not use Nokia Here Maps for these days. You can download the maps locally and use them offline.it even offers traffic estimations if you have network but I think google maps is better. This is a great app for backup when your data is over..
I’ve had a Nokia Lumia that I’ve happily changed for an iPhone 6s. First thing I did on the iPhone has been downloading Nokia Here Maps. I only use Waze at rush/peak hour.
I guess from these i don’t like/use only bluetooth. I got it in my car, but i don’t see point of it.
I would love to have quick defrost windscreen and heated steering wheel.
ive got a bluetooth radio plus microphone installed and i love it. comes in really handy to listen to your favorite music and being able to take a call without taking your eyes off the road
I like the power folding mirrors lol
HEY THERE IS A SWIFT !!! Lol
I think the thing about satnavs is also that most of the dashboards look much better with it than without it (e.g. 2006 Honda Accord)
true
I think the heated steering wheel is the only option on my car that my former self would laugh at current self for enjoying. Stuff like the electric privacy screen and soft close doors on the M5 are neat, and I feel like younger me would’ve found them neat as well.
