8 Memorable Moments From The Mexican Grand Prix

Nico Rosberg’s run of being second - and sometimes third - best came to an end at the returning Mexican Grand Prix. He claimed win number four of the season at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, beating newly-crowned champion Lewis Hamilton by two seconds.

Valtteri Bottas was third for Williams, ahead of Daniil Kvyat, Daniel Ricciardo and Felipe Massa. Compared to the last race in the USA, it wasn’t particularly exciting, but here are the best bits!

1. First corner contact

Despite the long run to Turn 1, Rosberg held off Hamilton and kept the lead. Behind, Kvyat moved up to third and Sebastian Vettel collided with Ricciardo, not giving the Aussie any room on the inside. He picked up a puncture and dropped back.

2. Off and around

Vettel’s scruffy race continued with a spin at Turn 7 on the 18th lap. It proved to be a tricky corner for the German…

3. Finns collide

It was Kimi Raikkonen vs Bottas part two in Mexico. Some said it was revenge for the Russian GP, others felt it was just a racing accident.

The two Finnish drivers battled mid-way through the Mexican Grand Prix but it all ended in tears at Turn 5, with Raikkonen breaking his suspension and retiring. Meanwhile Bottas continued on.

4. Spot of rallying

Carlos Sainz Jr tried to impress his father Carlos Sainz Snr with a spot of rallying across the grass, after running wide at Turn 4 as Sergio Perez tried to pass him. He later had to hand the position to the Force India, as the FIA felt he gained an advantage.

5. Hamilton not happy

Rosberg pitted for a second time on lap 46 but Hamilton wasn’t so keen to stop. He felt his tyres were fine and wanted to stay out, but Mercedes had other ideas. The video above is just a snippet of the conversation between Hamilton and his race engineer, but he eventually had to do what he was told.

6. Ferrari finds the wall

It was Ferrari’s first double DNF since Australia 2006. Vettel’s race ended in drama with a crash at the dreaded Turn 7. Unlike his earlier spin, this time his car slid right instead of left and he hit the barrier, damaging his car heavily. He apologised over the radio, saying he simply drove “s**t".

7. Little tease

Hasmaldonadocrashedtoday.com almost got a new update when Pastor Maldonado ran wide late in the race at Turn 12, having to quickly slow to avoid hitting the wall. Almost back to his best…

8. Rosberg wins

Rosberg crossed the line two seconds clear of Hamilton to win, with Bottas third. Kvyat and Ricciardo were fourth and fifth for Red Bull, with Massa sixth. Home hero Sergio Perez was eighth for Force India, behind team-mate Nico Hulkenberg. Max Verstappen and Romain Grosjean completed the top 10.

Despite the podium, conducted by Nigel Mansell, being pretty damn awkward, we did get to see some great Pirelli-branded sombreros and the atmosphere seemed electric, as it is positioned in the stadium section.
