8 Reasons Why Nissan Z Cars Are Brilliant

1. They're instantly recognisable

Throughout the generations of Z, the overall body style has consisted of a long nose and almost hatchback-like flair, especially after the redesign for the 350Z. Nissan did focus more on a luxurious style over performance between the 280ZX and 300ZX, which angered some enthusiasts, but pushed through to the curvaceous style that is revered today. No matter the year, even when small features like taillights change shape, you always know when a Z is headed your way.

2. They appeal to petrolheads of all ages

I’ve recently seen more middle-aged petrolheads driving 350s and 370s, which is great because they’re breaking the myth that the Z is a sports car for the 20-something. Although these newer generations of the Z are still dominant in most US car meets, they’re recognised as both functional for the empty nester and modifiable for the post-university drivers.

3. The Fairlady Z will never die

One of the coolest features of the Z-series is its consistent nod to its origin. The generations each have their own designation in the imported countries, such as the US Datsun from 1969 to 1985, yet Japan maintains its original label of Fairlady Z no matter the generation.

4. They handle brilliantly

If you’ve ever driven a Z, you know how easy it is to throw it sideways, but you also know that it’s got amazing mechanical grip. The Zs are on the heavier side for a two-seater (approximately 3200-3600lbs for a 350Z) yet have a power-to-weight ratio that will always make you smile.

5. Race-ready for less than a GT-R

Let’s talk numbers. A new GT-R costs £78,000 ($100,000), while a new 370Z NISMO costs £37,575 ($43,020). Just by taking the difference in price between the two, you can buy most, if not all, of these parts: a twin turbo, lightweight flywheel and performance clutch, stand alone engine management system, forged internals, bigger brakes, fully adjustable suspension, racing tyres, etc…Don’t forget an obnoxiously large wing for all of that power you’re now making.

6. Drift your Fairlady Z

Yes, I said drift it. Drift it like DK. With all of that bhp you’re now making from not buying a GT-R or Skyline, you’ll have a stupid grin plastered across your face while you’re drifting past that 240SX.

7. The Nissan 300ZX

How can we talk about the Z-series without mentioning this all-time best selling sports car (1990). It was the first production car to be designed on a CAD program and was available as a twin-turbo model. Unfortunately, it then killed itself with price inflation and society’s turn towards SUVs.

8. Have we forgotten the Nismo?!

The Nismo is awesome, and unfortunately gets overshadowed by the Skyline. Dependent upon the year, the Nismos can come equipped with Brembos, independent multi-link suspension, a larger exhaust, and a sexy aggressive body kit; you can’t go wrong with a Nismo if you’re a Z lover.
