Most of us ditch car toys when we grow up, but that isn’t the case for everyone. Some people simply go for bigger and more expensive play things, or even create incredible machines themselves from scratch. Here are eight incredible toys for big kids only.

1. RC Bullet: world’s fastest electric RC car

Nic Case has done his fair share of record breaking with his custom-built RC cars. This year he beat his previous two records by taking his bright orange legend, the “RC Bullet” to a speed of 188mph. His all-wheel drive rig is built with a wedge design to cut through the air at speed. Like a true enthusiast, Nic can’t stop there: he is already planning a new design to beat his current record.

2. Mammuth Rewarron 1/3 scale RC

This beastly machine built by Mammuth Works packs a four-stroke engine and gets to a speed of around 43mph. This monster can be adjusted with an on-board touch screen controller to enhance traction control, brake balance and more. You might need some extra room in the garage for adding one of these to your collection since it’s about two meters long and weighs 85kg. It costs around £4000.

3. Gold Lamborghini Aventador model

Robert Gülpen, an engineer and petrol head, built this beautiful Lamborghini model to be the most expensive and rare model car in the world. The stones on the car alone are valued at over £1.5 million, not to mention the carbon fibre body covered in 24-carat gold with platinum accents. The LED headlights, meanwhile, are made of clear diamonds.

4. BYD F3 Sui Rui

Top Gear fans and YouTube junkies already know about the thrills (and dangers) of turning a full-sized car into an RC machine. There’s no need for a ghetto RC conversion with the Chinese BYD F3, though, as it comes with remote control ability as standard. You can only move the car at a speed of 1.2mph and must be standing within 10 metres of it, but it has the potential for some good prank ideas.

5. Ford La Tosca concept RC car

Back in the 1950s and 1960s Ford charged its automotive designers with the task of modelling the cars of the future. In the same manner as concept cars are made today, the designers back then built scale models to show off their ideas. One particularly well-known designer, Alex Tremulis, took his builds a step further. He teamed up with a fellow Ford worker to cannibalise full size car parts to make real, running RC cars complete with steering, turning, headlights and indicators.

6. Peterbilt 359 RC

Check out this 1:4 scale truck by Italian model builder Luca Bordin. Solar panels charge the 750Watt electric motor that not only powers this huge 180kg machine, but also an LCD screen and sound system in the trailer. Bordin added so many details to make his masterpiece realistic, including a Tamiya sound system for the motor noise, a fog machine for the smoke stacks, chrome-like trim, a miniature horn and a brilliant paint job. It took almost a year to build, but the results prove it was time well spent.

7. i-H2GO Hydrogen Fuel Cell RC Car

Developed by Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies, this futuristic concept brings science and entertainment together in a fast little RC car. A small solar panel, or USB connection when there is no sun, is used to charge the refuelling station where water is separated into Hydrogen and Oxygen. Then the Hydrogen is pumped into the car’s miniature fuel cell where it produces electricity as it combines again with Oxygen, leaving water as the only by-product. The whole kit is available for around £134, but separate components are also sold for building custom cars.

8. Lego Bugatti Veyron
