Apparel Airbags Could Save Countless Lives And Prevent Biker Injuries
The technology behind this aparrel airbag is stunning. When used wirelessly in conjunction with the new Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Touring D Air, the airbag jacket - made by Italian protective clothing company Dainese - inflates in 45 milliseconds to drastically reduce the risk of serious injury or even death.
Algorithms manage data from ‘two triple-axis accelerometers fixed to the left and right fork bottoms of the Multistrada’s front suspension and an additional two rear triple-axis accelerometers mounted in the D Air Electronic Control Unit (ECU) positioned under the seat’, according to the firm.
When a crash is detected and if airbag deployment is required - systems work this out in 25 milliseconds - then full airbag inflation is triggered, which takes a further 20 milliseconds (a total of 45 milliseconds for the entire process).
As you can see from the video above, the airbag system gives the bike’s rider comprehensive upper-body protection, without being bulky or awkward to ride with. Amazing.
Big thanks to Ollie for the link (as seen on Jalopnik).
