Imagine for a moment that you are monumentally rich. So rich, that you have the house of your dreams, a fleet of cars and a big boat. What on earth do you buy to treat yourself when the next pay day/fat bonus cheque comes along?

Worry not, as we have a solution for this First World problem. It’s called Project Neptune, and it’s a submersible developed by Aston Martin and Triton Submarines.

Yep, you’ll soon be able to purchase an Aston Martin submarine. Admit it - you’ve just had a quick glance at the calendar to check it isn’t 1 April, haven’t you? The curious tie-up was first announced last year, but this is the first time we’ve been given any technical details.

Due to be revealed in production form later in 2018, Project Neptune will be able to take its pilot and two passengers as deep as 500 metres. The engineers worked hard to make the craft as slippery as possible by “reducing the frontal area,” and factoring in an increase in power compared to Triton’s other subs, it accelerates four times as quickly as the firm’s 3300/3 flagship (or is that flagsub?). The ‘sprint speed’ is five knots.

The interior has been enhanced with lashings of hand-stitched leather and carbonfibre trim, although it wasn’t the easiest job to get it in there. “Unlike a sports car where the interiors are installed into an open-sided cabin before the doors are fitted, everything you see inside will be lowered through the upper-hatch and assembled within the completed sphere of the pressure hull,” Aston Martin creative chief Marek Reichman explains.

No pricing has been revealed, but with myriad customisation options available, the amount paid by each customer is likely to vary considerably. But to give you an idea, the Triton 3300/3 we mentioned earlier is about $3 million…
