Aston Martin's Vanquish Replacement Is Called The DBS Superleggera

The current-generation Aston Martin Vanquish has been kicking around since 2012, but it’s not long for this world - pretty soon, a replacement will be here. But, it’ll go by a different name.

Gaydon has announced that when the Vanquish S (below) bows out, it’ll be replaced with something called the ‘DBS Superleggera’. The first bit should sound familiar - DBS is one of Aston’s most famous badges and was most recently used for the Vanq’s predecessor - but what about Superleggera? Allow us to explain…

It’s a reference to the ‘Superleggera’ coachbuilding technique devised by Italian firm Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, which Aston Martin used under license for the DB4, DB5 and DB6. The name “provides a hint as to what can be expected of this upcoming model,” Aston Martin says.

We can only assume that means the DBS Superleggera going to be much lighter than the DB11 upon which it’ll be based, which is a reasonably porky thing. As for what’ll be under the bonnet, we’re expecting a much more powerful version of Aston’s 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12, which is in a fairly relaxed state of tune in its current DB11 application.

More details will be revealed during the second quarter of 2018, but for now, what do you think of the name? Let us know in the comments.

This will be the first time the DBS and Superleggera name go together. Because the original was actually designed by William Towns instead of some Italian coach builder (because they were slightly struck for cash at the time). Even so, the DBS V8 (and the later V12) remain as my two all time favourite Astons! And I’m so excited for the name’s return!!

It has to be gray though, otherwise it might be a Lambo or a Ferrari

Good point about the DB11’s engine there. Although 600bhp is more than enough for anyone, with Koenigsegg’s specific outputs (of course, this is an extreme example, but anyway) they would achieve 1,518bhp. Go on Aston, you know you want to…

I’d rather see them take off the turbos and try for 650hp and 9000 RPM. The engine has a really short stroke so it should be possible. But really I don’t see why this needs more than 600-700hp even in today’s power-war era.

Why?
Superleggera = “Super Light”. The DB5 had a Superleggera version way back when.
