Ban ICE Cars As Soon As EVs Become Cheaper, Say Experts
A formal advisory committee has told the UK government to bring its 2040 ban on the sale of new internal combustion-powered cars forward by 10 years.
The Committee on Climate Change, an independent body formed in 2008 to help guide government policy on emissions, wants the ban to coincide with the 2030 date at which it predicts that EVs will be cheaper to buy than equivalent petrol- and diesel-engined cars.
In a report presented to the government this week, the CCC says that to meet targets to make all cars zero-emission by 2050, new car sales must be electric-only by no later than 2035, but preferably 2030.
The new recommendations implicitly include all types of hybrid in the proposed 2030 ban, as opposed to the existing 2040 ban, which excludes all hybrids classed as ‘ultra-low-emissions vehicles,’ which basically means plug-in hybrids only.
However, the CCC report also notes the UK’s woefully inadequate public charging infrastructure. It estimates than a tenfold increase in the current 21,000 chargers will be needed by 2030 to support the switch to EVs, plus 3500 of the very fastest types of chargers for motorway-based charging stations.
The government doesn’t have to base policy on the report but is likely to take it seriously. Other suggestions covered emissions reductions in home-heating, the aviation and farming industries, and domestic waste disposal.

Sort out brexit first and then you can do whatever on your island :D
People need to learn that the only way that we will survive as human beings is to cut our emissions dramatically. Electric cars are the only way we’re gunna survive
True, dispite the huge environmental impact of producing an electric car, we need to understand that it’s time to retire the ICE, one of mankind’s greatest inventions.
You should stop using cars today if that’s how you feel. My cars will never do damage like anyone having more than two kids.
First thing is to waste less energy in every aspect. We should travel less, build smaller houses (or only living blocks), eat less meat (the most co2 emission are made by this industry), buy less stuff from oversea (ships emmisions aren’t strictly controled) and so on. This leaves a great impact on our comfort and many people wouldn’t live so. Electric cars are a tiny bit that would help to reduce emmisions. Countries with a lot of renewable energy would get great results. In Slovenia (where I live) we have one nuclear power plant and one thermal power plant and many hidro power plants (provide a small amount of electricity). We haven’t enough electricity for the transportation. We need to build one or two Nuclear power plants to produce enough electricity for the same amount of vechicles (btw thermal power plants have a efficiency of ca. 20%, renewable energy much less). When it comes to commuting we need to use public transportation. Also we need to use the train transport even more also for the freight.
Ok, here are my thoughts on this…
Nice arguments man, I see we share the same point of view.
Thanks.
The number of people who still drive gas cars will be low enough that no one will really care about the pollution they are creating
well, that means we have just until 2035 to make the craziest ICE car as possible.
I hope car manufacturers will make the best ICE cars by 2030, so we can grab them all in the used market in 2035.
I would never buy a new electric car, I would rather convert some old car to electric if I’m being forced to drive something electric…
Ev swapped e30 is my dream now! With an all glass roof I’ve recently seen on fb and insta (it’s soooo beautiful!!!)
Yeah, because ICE cars will get taxed to the point where they are now expensive than ev’s, not because of the free market effects
Imma hurt somebody fr
These experts really hate internal combustion, don’t they?
At first the engineers dictated the development of the cars. Then (ca. since the 80’s) the economics and now the politicians.
Tbh i wouldnt mind a electric wrx impreza, i’d buy one as long as it has a proper awd system
I am making $92 an hour working from home. i was greatly surprised at the same time as my nighbour advised me she changed into averaging $ninety five however I see the way it works now. I experience masses freedom now that i’m my nonpublic boss. that is what I do……
