The Best Of Car Throttle 2010

Another 365 days has come and gone folks, and it's now time to reflect on Car Throttle's busiest year ever (well, it's only our second year in existence, but whatever). The past twelve months have seen us form partnerships with some of the largest manufacturers on the planet, has seen our team increase in size and our reputation grow across the world wide web.

We have carved out a really great niche in the performance car industry as being an online periodical containing quirky, editorial yet informative articles, and we hope to build that out in 2011. This, along with new video content and news, means that the next year should be phenomenally big.

Without further ado, here are the Top 10 articles from '10 that we have featured here on CT. These articles received the most pageviews according to our Analytics data and they give a fantastic overview of exactly what we've been up to. So please do enjoy whilst we while away the last few hours of 2010! Happy New Year!

1. Hennessey Venom GT: The 725bhp V8 Lotus Elise

Introducing the Hennessey Venom GT, a (mostly) bespoke mid-engine carbon-fibre supercar powered by an obscenely powerful GM LS9 motor. The basic ingredients are this: take one flyweight mid-engine Lotus Elise, which normally has a 190bhp Toyota engine, mix with equal parts tuned LS9; stretch, poke, and slam, and what do you have? A 2,400lb mid-engined carbon-fibre rocketship with a 725bhp V8 as the base engine. Let me reiterate: a Lotus Elise with 725bhp.

2. Ford Updates 2011 Mustang Shelby GT500

Ford’s Shelby GT500 Mustang derivative has always been sort of polar. As in, people either love it or hate it. There’s a lot to love about the GT500, mainly under the hood: a huge 5.4L 32v V8 that’s topped with a big old supercharger, cranking out loads of weapons-grade horsepower: 540bhp and enough torque to unseat an entire trailer park.

3. 2011 Subaru WRX Beefs Up!

The main visual difference are the STI-style flared fenders, which increase the track width 1.5? in the front and rear. There’s also a new blacked-out grille that’s way more attractive than the old one, and various and sundry other small changes.

4. 10 Surprisingly Unreliable Cars

Some vehicles have an absolutely baffling reputation for reliability in the face of considerable evidence. These are cars that people buy because their reputation leads them to believe they’ll enjoy a few years of trouble-free motoring, and it’s an unpleasant surprise when their wallet bleeds itself dry keeping them on the road. Here are a few to keep an eye out for that you might not have been aware of.

5. Geneva 2010: Porsche Cayenne

The updates to the current Porsche Cayenne have not been appealing in this writers opinion. The original Cayenne was no doubt handsome, but the refresh it received took away from that a bit. We’re think that the Cayenne is the looker of the SUV segment. It shares a platform with the VW Touareg, which is also being introduced at the Geneva Auto Show.

6. 2010 Acura MDX Review

Since its introduction it has been critically acclaimed, being Car and Driver’s Best Luxury SUV in 2005 and winning Motor Trend’s Sport/Utility of the Year Award in 2005, in addition to coming out on top in many other comparison tests. The MDX was fully redesigned in 2007 and received a Mid-Cycle Enhancement (MCE) for the 2010 model year. Is it everything it is cracked up to be? To find out the answer, CarThrottle tested the MDX for a week, giving it a chance to prove its mettle.

7. Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2010 Coverage

The Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS 2010) finally happened after a whole year’s delay. An event held every three years finally bears fruit and it was quite worth the wait. The event was scheduled to run from the 3rd to the 12th of December 2010 and CarThrottle was present at the event on opening day.

8. A Canadian 550-Hp AWD Volkswagen Scirocco Eh?

I like Canada. I went to college right across the border, and Canadians always struck me as a very nice bunch of people. Even when they get a little nuts, they seem to do it in interesting ways. Take, for example, this Volkswagen Scirocco that a British Columbia tuning firm got their hands on. Bottom line: 550-hp, all wheel drive and a whole lot of Loonies.

10. Used Car Buyer’s Guide: Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4

The 3000GT VR-4 is a sign of both what’s right and what’s terminally wrong with the automotive industry. Which is remarkable, because they haven’t made one since, oh -- 2000. US imports ceased in 1999, meaning the freshest of 3000GT’s are more than a decade old at this point, so the relevance of the VR-4 is questionable. But it was quite telling.
