A BMW 9-Series Might Be In The Pipeline

The Mercedes-Maybach S600 could have an incoming rival from BMW. Sure, it already has a kinda/sorta Bavarian challenger in the form of the 7-series, but for anyone who wants something posher than the 7er and the incoming 8-series Gran Coupe, there could eventually be a ‘9-series’ available.

Asked by Autocar if BMW was planning such a car, design director Adrian van Hooydonk dropped a tantalising hint. “Let’s say this: we won’t stop here [with the 8-series]. Obviously, our job is to have more ideas than the company can build, because the other way round would be very bad…My team and I are now looking at 2021 and beyond – as far out as 2030. We have a lot of plans.”

Beyond this - admittedly vague - suggestion, it’s all guesswork. Autocar speculates such a car would share much of its architecture and engine line-up with the 7-series and 8-series, which seems a fair assumption.

An appearance of the M760Li’s 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 would surely be a given…

to everyone saying it will compromise Rolls-Royce sales, just remember how Mercedes upped the price (by quite a lot) of it’s S-class just by changing the badges to Maybach, and it still sells. People looking for luxury and brand will overpay, even if it’s just a sticker

Cars are getting more powerful, fancy and more expensive.
My question is, who tf has that much money for these things, like who is buying them nonstop if companies can let themselves make these super fancy n expensive cars??!!
Where are the cool cheap cars at?

In today’s world, cars are bought on finance/PCP rather than with “real” money. Hence why every advert says “the new Peugeot 7016 with six doors etc, only £249 a month” and then three minutes of legal spiel. I was in a Mercedes dealer today getting a warranty/recall job done on my R-class, as I was wandering around the new CLS caught my eye, not in a purchase way but simply as something nice to look at. The nearby sales chap wandered over and when I asked how much it cost, no not monthly if I wanted to buy it today, he had no idea.

I overheard a woman on the train a few days ago talking about her new car. A 2018 “Ford 4x4” (it’s a 1-litre Ecosport). Her friend asked how much it cost, she said £220 a month, then when asked, “haha no I couldn’t afford that, it’s like 23 grand”

Sounds like a car that’ll be run on a shoestring budget, I bet the only time the fuel gauge reads full is when she picks it up.
