The BMW M8 Will Belt Out 650bhp In Its Shoutiest Form

BMW has released test mule photos of the M8 and confirmed the car will have over 600bhp, but the Competition version will reportedly pack a 650bhp punch
The BMW M8 Will Belt Out 650bhp In Its Shoutiest Form

Only a few days ago, we were watching the incoming M8 blast its way around the Nurburgring. Now, BMW has released a bunch of images of its M8 test mule, and given us some idea of the spec.

As we’d been expecting, it’ll use the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 as the M5. Only here, it’ll be slightly more powerful, with “north of” 592bhp on offer.

That power will be sent to all wheels via a rear-biased four-wheel drive system, which will - like the M5 - have a tyre-shredding two-wheel drive mode. Can I get a hell yes?

The rest of the press release is light on details, with BMW promising all the things we were expecting anyway, like “minimised weight, low centre of gravity, even weight distribution, optimum wheelbase and wide tracks”. However, Autocar is reporting that there’ll eventually be a Competition version with its V8 tickled to produce a mighty 650bhp. The publication also notes that the M8 will have double wishbone suspension derived from the M5’s setup.

The car will be launched in coupe form “in the course of 2019,” and will be followed by a drop-top plus a five-door ‘Gran Coupe’ version, BMW says.

You will wait for a long time then, since Merc doesn’t want to build a Coupe AMG E class

8 series is a rival for S-Class coupe, which means the M8 will compete with S63 AMG coupe

That’s the same output as an Enzo… Why is everything getting so damn powerful?

I completely agree, there is no need for that amount of power other than bragging rights

Because this car is not about being fast on the bends, it’s about going from vienna to paris at 200-300kph while sitting in your sofa. More power= less stress on the engine to get up to speed= smoother ride

Because everything is getting heavier. Every time a car is released, it has to be better than its predecessor. As the weight is continuously increasing on modern cars, so must the power. Its a real shame but that’s the way it seems to be going. Gordon Murray is hopefully going to save us though.

For the less technically inclined, how does the M6 and M8 differ?

This new M8 is a successor to the previous F12 M6. I think the only “new” car to use the 6 series badge is the 6 Series GT that looks like a coupe and wagon form of the 5 series.

That’s way too much power.
If I had a car manufacturer, it’d be focused on lightweight sports cars with around 220hp, not giant luxury land barges with more power than a truck

You should try one. It would change your mind.

If people wanted lightweight sports car they would make lightweight sports cars. People want powerful road yacht, so they make powerful road yachts.

If the best car to be in when cornering is a lightweight sports car…
Then the best car to drive in literally any other situation on a paved road is a superb cruise missile.

Unless you have a good Motorsport following or if you managed to suck Jeremy Clarkson a face off

Good luck making a successful small sports car company

Read about 8 series- It was ment to be LUXURIOUS sports coupe. If you want lightweight sport/track car get m2 or m3 instead

Not my cup of tea…
Is it trying to be a comfortable coupe? Then it will be ruined by M-spec chassis. Is it trying to be a sportscar? Then it will be ruined by its weight. Is it to be used on the track? Fun fact: you’ll never see one on a track day. Is it to be used on the road? Then it doesnt need 650hp which will ruin it any driving pleasure.

Imo, get a 540e/540i plus the new Z4
