BMW's New Diesel Engine Has Four Friggin' Turbos
Diesel engines may be under a lot of scrutiny right now thanks to the whole VW thing, but that doesn’t mean innovation stops. Only a few weeks ago Audi revealed its 4.0-litre V8 TDI SQ7 with electric compressor technology, and now BMW has released a similarly punchy 3.0-litre oil-burner.
It’s a replacement for the old triple-turbocharged unit (pictured above), only this time BMW has upped the ante and added a fourth turbocharger. Yep, quad-turbocharged - not something you’ll see terribly often outside of a Bugatti Veyron.
Details are still fairly thin on the ground, but according to Bimmerpost, we’re looking at 389bhp and 561lb ft of torque. It could be good for more twist than that, but apparently the ZF eight-speed is the limiting factor here: it’s simply not able to take any more torque.
The old triple-turbo ‘N57S’ unit had a small blower for low revs, a larger turbocharger that kicked in at the mid-range, and another smaller one for higher engine speeds. What the new engine (designated B57) does is replace the larger turbocharger with a pair of smaller units, giving a quartet of little turbos. As well as upping power the new quad-turbo system is responsible for a five per cent drop in fuel consumption.
The engine will first appear in the BMW 750d xDrive, where it’ll propel you from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds. Although we’re holding out hope for the engine to appear in a successor to the M550d…

Funny you say that, since the Veyron uses a VAG motor lifted straight from Audi/Volkswagen. Hell, its the same engineering design for the W16 as it is for the W8.
And as far as quad turbos go, bugatti was not the first.

Not really, turboed cars are more reliable thrn N/A (at least on my personal experience)
They ain’t got nothing on the Supra…
I think the Toyota Supra knows their problems…
People talking about more turbos = more maintenance costs. They need to realize the importance of regular oil changes and CCV changes most likely 10 years down the line/after 100K. People can afford high performance cars but they dont know sh*t about maintenance and what to keep in check. Subject change. This is just 1 example why i love BMW. More turbo’s = more power + less MPG.
people that dont know sh*t about maintanance are going with their car at BMW to maintain it in order to keep the warranty
Come one, apply some logical sense in here. Repairing four turbos will be a lot more expensive than fixing one. And there’s only higher probability one or more will go wrong with time. BMW lost it’s legendary reliability when they started putting turbo in every single engine version. I’m not saying turbos are bad, just not that many in a diesel engine, which is supossed to be a work horse. Just read up some more on how reliable new models are. There are idiots who don’t know what oil change is, but overall BMW is dropping in quality… Just like most of premium brands right now.
To all Bugatti owners: Don’t brag about your quad turbo engines to 550d and 750d owners.
