The Borgward BX6 Is The Unlikely SUV That Could Come To Europe
Borgward, the old German brand that was declared bankrupt in controversial circumstances in the early 1960s, has just launched its latest car to rival the likes of the BMW X4. While it’s limited to developing markets for now, Borgward’s plans take it to Europe.
Its range is beginning to look more than a little Westernised as the firm gears up for exactly that task. This is the BX6, the Euro-centric coupe-crossover with four doors, a DS-alike front end and vaguely Renault-ish rear lights.
Yours with a 220bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-pot, an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. Sounds like quite a handy everyday car, really. A plug-in hybrid is on the way. It’s impressively well spec’d, with LED headlights, 19-inch wheels, stop-start and a leather interior. Naturally you can include sat-nav and the latest infotainment apps, too.
Launching in the Middle East and South America first, this year, it will be introduced to China and other Asian nations in 2019. After that… well, it’s purely a question of how quickly its sales successes bring it, or its successors, to the EU.
Borgward was revived in 2008 by the grandson of the man who founded it. The money comes from a subsidiary of Chinese automotive giant BAIC; the same one that actually builds the cars. The first new Borgward car in over 50 years went on sale in 2017.
