Brabham Automotive Is A New Car Maker With A Famous Old Name

While we know nothing for sure about its potential business plans, one of motor racing's most successful family names looks to be moving into building road cars

David Brabham is launching a low-volume car brand using one of the most famous surnames in motorsport history.

The Australian racer has himself won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, plus the American Le Mans championship in 2009 and 2010, and his father, Sir Jack Brabham, is a three-time Formula One champion.

The newly-created Brabham Automotive announced itself in a Tweet yesterday, while David Brabham also Tweeted that he was “immensely proud” to declare the new brand. He wrote that it’s “an exciting new chapter for the iconic Brabham name.”

It follows ‘Project Brabham,’ a troubled attempt to crowd-fund a return to the track for the Brabham Racing team. It was hoped in 2014 that the team could start in the LMP2 endurance racing class before becoming a fully-fledged LMP1 constructor within a few years, but it has so far failed to produce a car.

Brabham Automotive is rumoured to be following a ‘racing car flagship first, road-going version second’ strategy, but we’ll bring you more confirmed details when we get them.
