The Dodge Demon V-Maxes At Just 164mph, But It Gets There Fast

Hennessey Performance took a standard Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and ran it to its maximum speed of just 164mph, but the way it gets there is... dramatic

The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is, as we all know, monstrously fast off the line. Banned from competition for being too fast, and fast enough even to make one American motoring title call for a blanket ban. We disagreed.

But one thing that’s rarely explored is its top speed. Geared for maximum punch over the quarter-mile, it’s less than you’d think: just 164mph. That’s 5mph slower than a Honda Civic Type R…

Anyhoo, Hennessey Performance decided to test it for themselves. Watch the video to see how incredibly quickly it gets there.

The title says v-max, which i assume means to max out velocity. However, in the description, it uses the term speed. Velocity and speed are not interchangeable and now i dont understand a single thing

Apologies for the crime before physics, but sometimes you just have to make a headline shorter…

Yes, they are the same in that context. Velocity consists of the speed at which the object moves and the direction into which it moves. Since we all know in which direction the car moves (forward, go figure), speed and velocity are interchangeable.

“Just 164”

164 miles per hour is fast enough to get someone pulled over, license taken, arrested, car impounded, or worse….

Or just a Stern talking to…

Also, the tires would not survive if the car was going 200 mph.

You also have to take into consideration that it was made to live its life a quarter mile at a time.

Well you know, that’s not right for every country in the world ;)

It’s not banned for being too fast, it was banned because it didn’t meet the safety regulations. A roll cage would fix that issue.

Not just the roll cage but also a parachute

Too bad a manufacturer cannot instal roll cages from the factory. That’s also why the GT3RS doesn’t come with a roll cage

Hellcat gets to 200….It’s all in the gearing, son

It’s all relative. 164mph for an 800bhp+ car isn’t a lot!

It’s true, the Hellcat could almost do 200, so you know it’s just not set up for top speed.

Yes indeed. My 400HP Corvette C6 does 186mph.

You can always do the science…
If a Dodge Demon takes x seconds to reach 164mph
and a Honda Civic Type R takes y seconds to reach 169mph,
Assuming all factors remaining equal, how far would the Demon have traveled before the Type R passes it?

Isn’t the red key the limited one? I might be getting this mixed up with the Hellcat, if I am, please correct me.

Nope, the limited one is the black key

164 is plenty for the quarter mile, it’s all about the gearing
