This Dodge Viper GTS Has A £13,000 Auction Estimate, But There’s A Big Catch

RM Sotheby's Duemila Ruote auction is full of amazing cars, but as they're all being sold following a government seizure, buying one isn't all that simple...
This Dodge Viper GTS Has A £13,000 Auction Estimate, But There’s A Big Catch

Unless they’re of particular historical significance, racing cars don’t tend to sell for huge sums at auctions. But even so - the €15,000 - 20,000 estimate for this 2003 Dodge Viper GTS seems utterly mad. So why is it so low?

It’s because it’s part of RM Sotheby’s ‘Duemila Ruote’ (2000 Wheels) auction in Milan, which is selling off 430 cars, over 150 motorcycles and 60 boats, all seized from one businessman who went bankrupt three years ago.

So for a kick off, everything being sold has been sitting for three years. Not ideal. But here’s the crucial bit, as listed on the auction page:

“Please note this lot is currently under an order of seizure, which will be removed following the sale. Upon receipt of payment from the buyer, RM Sotheby’s will liaise with the appointed administrator for release of the seizure, which is expected to take approximately 10 days. During this time, lots will remain onsite at the Fiera Milano and collection can be arranged after confirmation from RM that the seizure order has been lifted.”

With storage listed on RM’s site as €300 a day plus VAT, you can expect a hefty fee dumped on top of the final auction price. And that’ll only go up further if there’s a delay.

Finally, as with much of the auction’s lots, there are no documents offered with the car, something which will no doubt give the next owners a huge headache.

But still, we’re fascinated to see how much this auction’s lots go for. From a Ferrari F50 to powerboat racers, there’s an incredible array of vehicles being sold.

The auction itself will take place from tomorrow through to Sunday.

So the €300 per day of storage is paid for those 10 days or the 3 years it has been sitting?

if it’s the 3 years your better off buying a brand new viper, and race car’ing it yourself, with a siezure fee of 328,500$ minus taxes and interest which would probably have been applied after the first 6 months (here in canada anyway) taxes ranging anywhere from 13-20%. ouch

How come there aren’t any dials at all? No tachometer, no temp, no oil pressure, no nothing and it even looks like an auto

It looks to me like there are some digital guages up there, tach with shift light probably on the a pillar so we can’t see it. Also looks to me like a manual.. Just has none of the stuff to make the stick look pretty.
