Does It Bother You That The Porsche Boxster No Longer Has A Flat-Six?
The relentless onward charge of downsizing has hit Porsche once again, with the Boxster losing its sweet N/A flat-six for a turbo flat-four. But does that bother you?
We’ve been expecting it for a while, but it’s finally happened: the Porsche Boxster range has moved to turbocharged four-cylinder power. Sure, the engines are more powerful and have punchier torque outputs - with the 2.0-litre version putting out 25bhp and 66lb ft more than the old 2.7-litre six - plus there’s the economy benefits to think about. But losing that characteristic Porsche flat-six howl does seem like a shame.

Everything will be better other than the sound….. But with it being a boxer engine can you get it uneven headers is the question…..
I suspect it may improve the weight balance, at least.
Ya, the more cylinders the better
turbo 4 > N/A 6
I would only buy a 911 as I’m a 911 snob….
On the 911 it’s totally different though….
The flat 6 wasn’t really its defining characteristic, so as long as the new engine is a good one, I’m fine with it
It was a very defining characteristic. Everything about it was good. The steering, chasis, grip, engine, engine placement. Now they are taking one thing after another. Steering, engine. It just seems to be less. I suppose you can add more power, but a Boxster wasn’t about power.
All Porsches have to be flat six no matter what! Love the soundtrack of it!
As a Porsche owner, son and grand son of Porsche owners, and aspiring Porsche Technician: I DON’T CARE !
It’s a Porsche, there is no such thing as a bad sounding Porsche, these engines will be way better in terms of tuning than the one they replace, along with being smaller, which makes then easier to work on.
Totes fine on a boxster, making more with less is called skill.
YES IT DOES. A LOT.
