Drifting A Gargantuan Ford F-450 Through The Snow Looks Way More Elegant Than You'd Expect

Rally champion Tim O'Neil proves that all you need to be able to drift is talent, commitment, and a healthy sprinkling of snow

I haven’t played a video game in ages. I don’t own a console, I don’t own a gaming PC; I don’t even own a television (combine this admission with a glance in my garage and it’s not hard to pin me down taxonomically: Hipsterus Insufferablus). But I used to have a small obsession with Gran Turismo 4. And out of the hundreds of cars in my digital garage “The Drift Ram” was my favourite. The truck was exactly what it sounds like, no need for further explanation.

To a petrolhead, drifting a vehicle obviously not designed for such shenanigans is one of the funniest things in the world. The fine folks at Team O’Neil Rally School in New Hampshire know this, and they also have the skills to pull it off. Watch the team’s founder, rally champion Tim O’Neil, drift a gargantuan diesel Ford F-450 dually around the rally campus and try not to laugh.

Here in Alberta its more rare to see someone drifting an EVO or STI than a 1 or 2 ton truck

He had 4wd on which is a little easier to make up for the lack of weight on rear tyres. Had he done this in 2wd it would be much more impressive. Not that this isn’t by any means. The precision of his drifts is amazing. I know how hard it is to drift in the snow and be precise with your vehicle. I serve an old 1999 suburban and from time to time I’ll do this on my commute. 60 miles is a long and occasionally boring commute.

Pretty much anywhere in the U.S. or Canada that gets snow and people have pickup trucks, people will be drifting their trucks all over the place.

That’s a lot of truck to throw around. Good thing they knew what they were doing.

I drifted my dually 1 ton ford truck last time it snowed where I’m at, alot easier than you’d think.

especially a dually, had a Dodge 3500 Cummins, and an early ‘93 model GMC factory order 6.5 diesel with singles in the back. The Cummins would rip up asphalt but the GM was so controlled pulling an 100ft drift with that factory Eaton LSD in the back.

Come snowy weather, there isn’t a parking lot in Asheville that doesn’t have guys in big trucks drifting and/or doing donuts all over the place.
