A man who was hoping to escape punishment for crashing his car while drunk has been bitten on the backside by modern technology, after his car reported the impact to police.

In the aftermath of binning his Ford Fiesta badly enough to fire the airbags, the dim-witted driver in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, apparently took himself home on foot, hoping to duck the law and present an excuse after he’d given himself chance to sober up.

However, unknown to the intoxicated weasel, the Fiesta’s Sync system is programmed to phone details of a hard crash straight to the emergency services, in case the driver is unconscious and needs urgent help.

When the bobbies turned up at the empty Fiesta, they traced its owner and discovered him quite clearly still over the limit, and the little Ford’s emergency call was enough to place the drink-driver back at the scene.

The technology is set to be an EU requirement from April 2018.

“I was mad that I crashed my car, so I went home and immediately got drunk” a good lawyer should get him off the hook.
