Dyno Run Suggests The BMW M5 Could Really Be Pushing 690bhp
Hold onto your hats, people, because the F90 BMW M5 seems to be making way, way more power than advertised.
BMW will tell you it’s good for 592bhp and 553lb ft at the crank, which is a lot. But YouTube channel IND Distribution has just put its own – standard – car on a dyno and reached figures of 625bhp and 608lb ft… at the wheels. In four-wheel drive.
If those numbers really are correct for this just-run-in F90 M5, allowing for a guesstimate drivetrain loss of 10 per cent, it would mean BMW is underestimating the M5’s figures by about 100bhp and well over 100lb ft. It would make it about as powerful as a Ferrari 488…
At 1855kg the M5 is a fair bit heavier than the 1544kg 488 GTB, but even with a 311kg deficit we have to admit we’re sceptical that the M5 can really be putting out quite that much of the good stuff…

Someones been busy copying McLaren

Do you think 592bhp is the new 276bhp?
Horspower war, today we have a 500bhp in a sedan bla bla!
You trully are making manufacturers to be conservative about their numbers
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Its supposed to be a sleeper!
What’s a sleeper? Sorry I don’t know
Volkswagen, more toxic fumes than advertised.
BMW, more power than advertised.
It startet with Dieselgate. Now we have Powergate?
McLaren and Porsche have started Powergate ages ago 😂
Old BMW 4.4 V8 (M60, M62) pushed around 300PS at crank and were advertised at 286PS so we’ve actually seen it before from fellow Bayerische Motoren Werke
BMW was one of the companies involved in the Dieselgate cartel… 🐸☕️
I ain’t even mad, in fact, its great!
hehehe “69”0
sorry ill leave now
If you saw CarWow’s drag race between this and the E63S, you’ll see that the heavier E63 beat the M5 by miles. If the M5 pushes this much, then the 604 (apparently) bhp E63S might churn out over 700 horses. Just sayin’
By miles?!? I recall it was just a tenth or two. That’s probably within the range of random variation and other stuff (surface imperfections, whether the car was run-in and warm, tyre temperature, driver weight etc).
“Miles”
It was lot less than a mile, maybe a few metres at most.
And there was another drag race between them that was trending, and the M5 won that.
So they’re really hard to judge between, and the only real way to judge is using a simulation.
So they probably have really similar hp
But how much is the E63S pushing?
Now, does it? Even the picture you posted states otherwise
Whatever happened to being natural and stating the facts?? These people can’t be lieing about HP. How about, be truthful and say that “Our car puts out HP as much as a 488, now for $100,000 instead of $300,000!!”. I swear, this is like the automotive equivalent of saying Kim Kardashian has a natural body.
No idea. In the past, Japanese cars lied about their hp because of the Gentleman’s Agreement “limiting” them to 276hp. Some manufacturers might lie about their less expensive models in order to make it seem like there’s a larger performance benefit of buying the more expensive car. Perhaps Merc wants people to buy the upcoming AMG 4-door. Wouldn’t make sense for BMW though since the Competition Pack usually just adds 25hp or so.
It’s an insurance thing because the more power a car makes it’ll cost more to insure. That’s why the 03-04 SVT Cobras were advertised with 390 horsepower and 390 torque while it made somewhere in the 450 horsepower and 416 torque range
They measure HP at BMW under worse case scenario. High heat, low air flow, max load. This provides a base line HP that will be the minimum that the car will always produce. If it produces more under better conditions, great. But you will never be able to say that it is not making the horses it claims and then sue them for false advertising
The M5 is like the smart kid who got maximum in the latest exam, but goes around saying they “barely passed”.
Nice1 BMW, you got caught out lmao.
