The EK9 Civic Type-R Is The Most Exclusive Honda You Can Buy For £5k
With our latest Readers’ Rides video featuring a stunning EK9 Civic Type-R, we’ve been lusting after a Honda hot hatch of our own. EK9 refers to the first Civic Type-R, which is based on the sixth generation of the Honda hatchback. Under the bonnet is a 1.6-litre B16B four-pot producing 182bhp at a screaming 8200rpm. That’ll get you from 0-62mph in around six seconds.
It’s not all about straight-line performance, though. EK9s are stripped back to keep the weight low, and have a limited-slip differential. It all comes together to give a nimble front-wheel drive chassis that handles brilliantly, just like the Civic’s Integra Type-R cousin.
Of all Type-R Civics, EK9s are the most sought after. There aren’t many about on our roads, as they were never officially sold in the UK. Because of this, the occasional import models that do come up aren’t what you’d call cheap. This 1997 example, for instance, is up for £5750.
That sounds like quite a bit, especially considering that a newer, seventh-gen Civic-based EP3 Type-R can be picked up for as little as £2500. However, buy yourself an EK9 and you’ll be driving around in something much more exclusive that should hold its value very well indeed.
This Type-R is in a clean, standard condition, but if you fancy seeing an EK9 of a more modified variety, check out our latest Readers’ Rides video below. You won’t be disappointed.
