F1 Canadian Grand Prix: Race Marshal Tragically Loses His Life In Crane Accident
RIP the race marshal who was tragically crushed by a crane after the race had finished
Tragically, the 2013 Canadian grand prix has been overshadowed by the death of a 38-year old race marshal shortly after the end of the event. Reports indicate the volunteer marshal was struck by the crane carrying Esteban Gutierrez's crashed Sauber, after stumbling while trying to retrieve a dropped radio. Though the marshall was rushed to hospital, he succumbed to his injuries at 18:02 local time.
Any death in sport is one too many, and though no driver has been lost in F1 since 1994, three marshals have now died at races since 2001. These guys are most often unpaid volunteers, without whom the races simply couldn't be held. RIP.
