F1: Vettel Tears Up NYC With DC

Formula 1’s reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel tore up the streets of New York this week, alongside David Coulthard, to give a live preview of the 2013 Street Race Circuit beneath the Manhattan skyline

You would imagine that America, one of the largest nations in the world with a rich history in car culture, would embrace Formula 1 as the largest motorsport in the world. This is not the case. Formula 1’s reputation in America has been almost irreparably low since the tyre debacle in 2005 that saw just 6 cars start the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

This season’s race in Texas has been dogged by rumours of false starts and setbacks that have done nothing to repair F1’s image in the country, but the doubts over this street circuit have effectively been put to bed with the attendance of Vettel and his Infiniti GL Coupe.

Boasting a 348bhp V6, Vettel and DC gave their (completely mental) police escort exactly what every stereotypical New York cop wants: doughnuts. With scant regard for the fact that the streets were only ‘kind of’ closed (journalists along for the ride have reported darting between traffic at red lights) the pair of Infinitis lit up their rears and left their mark on the asphalt to the delight of the fans lining the sidewalk.

The circuit looks exciting and the pack darting through the high rise, concrete jungle should give an incredible sense of speed. The drivers cane it past 200mph on the straight, with the 3.2 mile course weaving back through Weehawken and West New York, featuring the bumps and elevation changes that give the ultimate street course in Monaco such character.

The prospect of hearing a field of Formula 1 cars screaming along the banks of the Hudson River with the iconic Manhattan skyline as a backdrop is enough to send joyous shivers through the spines of fans worldwide.

Ecclestone: Make. This. Happen.
