This Ferrari F40 Engine Is For Sale And It’s Time To Treat Yourself

Ferrari F40 engines without cars built around them make hens' teeth look as common as pennies in a wishing well, and now's your chance to buy one

The frequency with which Ferrari F40 engines come to market without the rest of the car wrapped around it is about the same as how often British politicians get caught at an all-night rave.

It must be a blue moon tonight, though, because the rarest of things has occurred. This modified F40 engine, partly as-new and used only for display, and partly used parts taken off another F40 engine, is up for sale on America’s Bring a Trailer classifieds website.

The listing says the 2.9-litre Tipo F120D V8 was built in 1992 but never assigned to a chassis, which reminds us a little of that fully-functional ‘display-only’ F136 FB 4.5-litre V8 that was never assigned a 458 as a home.

As standard the 90-degree vee threw 471bhp at the wheels and revved to 7750rpm. With the mods installed it seems fairly clear that no tuning has taken place, so it will all need setting up on a dyno before it runs properly. But… just imagine the kind of project car you could cook up with this. It’s not original, so why ‘save’ it?

The current owner bought it in 1998 for spares for his own F40, after it had been a display item for about six years. His car had been modified so he took parts off this crate-spec unit to return his own to standard. In return this one has been fitted with the used parts from the modded lump.

What you can buy here, with the bidding at a very reasonable-sounding $22,000 at the time of writing, is a factory original block with custom steel cylinder liners, machined and ported cylinder heads with larger valves, a titanium valvetrain and custom camshafts, all of which are used. It’s largely disassembled and will be delivered that way.

Spares include custom intercoolers designed to work with performance-boosting mods that span Garrett turbos, a new intake system, a custom exhaust system and more. There’s a spare set of pistons, too.

It comes with a California bill of sale, and will be delivered in a crate for you to reassemble at your leisure. We’ll have to stop, now, because we appeared to have drooled into our keyboards. Check out the huge array of pictures on the listing and allow yourself to dream a little…

Imagine making the ultimate 80’s car cocktail; a Delorean body, Lotus Mid engine backbone chassis and the F40 engine and transmission. Maybe some Porsche elements too for good measure.

You could put that motor in the front (RWD) and stick the turbos out the hood!
