Fitting A Renault Twingo With A 316bhp V6 Engine Is Ridiculously Awesome

Tiny car? Check. Massive V6 mid-mounted engine? Check. Epic performance? Oh yes

Renault has only gone and done it again. Today it unveiled the Twin’Run concept; a mental combination of Twingo bodyshell, steel tubular racing chassis and a glorious 316bhp V6 taken from a Megane racer. And yes, it’s seriously rapid.

How the hell they managed to squeeze the engine in there might be a mystery to some, but there are those who’ll remember the days of the insane Clio V6 like they were last week. Who needs a boot or rear seats when you’ve got a rear end full of POWERRRRR?

But the most bizarre aspect of the Twin’Run isn’t the engine, or even the insane but stunning styling. It’s Renault’s description. Some comedian in an office somewhere calls this little glass-composite barnstormer ‘a modern and playful take on the city car.’ We assume he or she didn’t write it with a straight face.

Picture this: a Renaultsport Megane, which is a brisk car to say the least, has a power-to-weight ratio of 186bhp per tonne. Then compare it to the 950kg, rear-wheel drive Twin’Run, which squats 57% of its weight over the rear wheels and creates a trouser-tenting 333bhp per tonne; good for 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. And that’s probably limited more by fear than power.

Aerodynamic mods reduce the lift the car naturally creates at speed and it gets visual nods to the Renault 5 Turbo. Mainly just with big number five graphics on the doors, but at least they tried...

All Renault is saying at this stage is that the Twin’Run is previewing the styling of their next city car, but maybe if we all get together and beg for long enough, they’ll put number plates on it and sell it for sub-£15,000...

And if not, console yourself with a video of fast Renaults going fast around a track.
