After many months of teasing and tantalising glimpses at a truly vast rear wing, Ford has finally shown us the final version of the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck, the EV tech demonstrator that it’s hoping will take overall honours at this year’s running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Along with a full reveal of the livery, we’ve finally got details of the powertrain, and it doesn’t come as a massive surprise. Developed by Austrian high-performance EV specialists STARD, it’s effectively the same setup as the Transit SuperVan 4.2 that took second overall at 2023’s edition of the event.

That means three motors pushing ‘1400-plus’ bhp to all four wheels, which should be plenty when the 12.4-mile course throws 156 turns at its competitors.

More impressive than that, though, is the aero setup. You probably don’t need to be told this – you can just look at that enormous rear wing and the diffuser that looks like the entrance to the Channel Tunnel. All of this works towards a peak downforce figure of 2.7 tonnes at 150mph. For context, that’s about twice what a modern F1 car produces at the same speed. Crikey.

The SuperTruck is also packing forged magnesium wheels and a fully inboard suspension setup.

Ford is aiming to best the time of 8min 47.682sec that the SuperVan 4.2 set last year, and to that end, it’s once again brought in modern-day Pikes Peak legend Romain Dumas. He not only drove the SuperVan to second last year, but still holds the overall record of 7min 57.148sec in the wild Volkswagen ID.R.

The SuperTruck probably won’t break that particular barrier, but it could well be in with a shot of going one better than Ford’s last effort and taking overall honours this year. We’ll know for sure when it takes on the mountain on 23 June.
