We now know what Ford will be calling its new all-electric sporty crossover. Yep, the Blue Oval is tapping into its history hard to flog the BEV, calling it the ‘Mustang Mach E’. We suspect this may cause some consternation amongst the Pony Car faithful.

Ford is dubbing the car “the newest member of the Mustang family,” although the link between it and the internal combustion-powered ‘Stang is tenuous at best - there are a few styling nods as seen on recently-spied Mach E test mules, but that’s about it.

The Mustang Mach E will sit on a bespoke platform, and while we don’t have any exact details about the powertrain, we do know that the range will be 373 miles going by the WLTP cycle. That’s quite a bit more than the Audi E-Tron, Jaguar I-Pace and Mercedes EQC manage, but in a car that’s likely to be significantly less expensive.

We’ll find out how much it costs on 18 November, when Ford will be revealing the car in full (with some help from Idris Elba) in Los Angeles, while also opening order books.

How do you feel about this use of the Mustang name?

I think it’s time to take the old girl out back, with a shotgun. Congratulations Ford, the Mustang nameplate is dead because you tried to flog an electric SUV
