Frankfurt 2011: Suzuki Swift Sport Unveiled

Yes, I know we're a little early, but there's something about hot hatches that makes us pee our pants in excitement.

Yes, I know we're a little early, but there's something about hot hatches that makes us pee our pants in excitement. Whilst that may (or may not) be journalistic hyperbole, what is true is that Suzuki's previous model Swift Sport was a crowd favourite, loved the world over thanks to its fun drive, stylish looks and inviting interior.

It comes to Car Throttle brethren as no surprise then that we want to report on concept hot hatches and ready-to-be-released ones too. This is even more relevant, as CT HQ England has just taken delivery of a 2011 Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart (a 1.5-litre turbo monster) which promises to make my week less depressing as I watch London turn into a flaming ruin of riots and yob culture. Tear.

Promising to be unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show next month - which we will be covering live from Germany - Suzuki's new motor sports a face-lift with sleeked back headlights, a larger black grille, lower front bumpers and a reclining roof which combine to give an even sportier feel than before. Twin exhausts and a roof spoiler complete the trimmings and make this a real competitor to the looks of the Cooper S.

Suzuki have told us that they will again opt for a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated powerplant governed by a six-speed manual transmission. This updated engine should be good for 136bhp and 160Nm of torque, which is an uprating of 13bhp on the previous version. 0-62 miles per hour will come in at 8.5 seconds with a top speed of 125mph - good enough to get your license torn up by our law enforcement friends.

To me, 136bhp just sounds a little lazy from Suzuki, especially from 1.6-litres of displacement. The Colt Ralliart manages to pack in 147 horsepower so in these troubled times where prices at the petrol pumps have never been higher, maybe it's time for someone to tell the engineers at Suzuki to stick a blower onto their units. Any volunteers?

As usual, we will be providing you with a lot more images in the flesh and more information on the car when we touch down in Deutsche-town in mid-September, so until then, brace yourselves!
